Constulose Information:

What is Constulose?

Constulose is a brand drug that is prescribed to treat constipation and liver disease. It is a synthetic sugar that comes in liquid form.

Constulose works in patients with constipation to soften the stool. In patients with liver disease, Constulose works to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood by pulling ammonia from the blood and into the colon, where it is expunged from the body.

How do I use Constulose?

Lactulose is available as a liquid and it is to be taken orally. If it is being used for treatment for constipation, Constulose is typically prescribed to be taken once daily. If it is being used for treatment of liver disease, Constulose is typically prescribed to be taken 3 or 4 times per day.

Your dose of constulose may be mixed with up to half of a glass of water, milk, or fruit juice to improve the taste of this medication.

Take Constulose exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on the packaging of your prescription.

Before using Constulose, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Constulose

  • you are allergic to any medications

  • you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications

  • you are taking any other laxatives

  • you are taking antacids or antibiotics

  • you have diabetes

  • you must follow a low-lactose diet

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding

Additional precautions:

If you are having medical testing on your rectum or colon, or if you are having surgery of any kind, tell your doctor that you are using Constulose.

What are the possible side effects of using Constulose?

Contact your doctor if you experience diarrhea, gas, or nausea while using Constulose or if these symptoms do not go away.

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience vomiting or stomach pain or stomach cramps while using Constulose.

What if I forget to use a dose of Constulose?

Take your missed dose of Constulose as soon as your remember to take it. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue to take the medication as prescribed. Do not take a double dose of Constulose.

How do I store Constulose?

Store this medication securely in the container in which it came, at room temperature. Keep away from excess moisture or heat. Keep out of reach of children. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

What happens if I overdose on Constulose?

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
