Latuda Information:

What is Latuda?

Latuda (lurasidone hydrochloride) is a benzisothiazol-derivative atypical antipsychotic. It is administered as a tablet to be taken orally in doses ranging from 20mg to 120mg. Most often it's prescribed to treat schizophrenia; however, your doctor may prescribe it for other reasons, including bipolar disorder. Its method of action includes altering the activity of certain neurochemicals in the brain.

How do I take Latuda?

Latuda medicine must be taken with food; what's more, it needs to be a small meal or snack of at least 350 kcal. Take your prescription at the same time of day every day. Your dose will be determined by your doctor, however, it is often 1 pill taken by mouth daily. Drink plenty of water while taking this medication to avoid becoming dehydrated. If you have any questions about how to take Latuda, contact your pharmacist for patient assistance.

Before taking Latuda, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking any other prescribed or over the counter drugs or medications, supplements, or vitamins, especially ketoconazole or rifampin, sleeping pills or sedatives, narcotic pain medications or muscle relaxers, medications for mental illness, medications for seizure or movement disorders.
  • You have Parkinson's Disease.
  • You have or have a history of heart disease or disorder, including high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorder, high cholesterol, or recent heart attack or stroke.
  • You have a neurologic disorder with seizure or rigid muscles.
  • You have a movement disorder.
  • You have low WBC.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder, including diabetes.
  • You have or have a history of breast cancer.
  • You have depression or bipolar disorder, especially if you have had suicidal thoughts.
  • You are often dehydrated.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or you are an alcoholic.
  • You have dementia.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or you plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, especially if you are in or near your last trimester.

What are the possible side effects of taking Latuda?

Some Latuda drug side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of the following, seek emergency medical assistance: convulsions, uncontrollable movements (blinking, eye rolling, chewing, lips smacking), rigid muscles or tremors, drowsiness or dizziness, fainting or feeling as though you might faint, hostility or other agitation, confusion, thoughts of self-harm, swelling in your face or lips, blurry vision, swelling in your tongue or throat, high fever with seating or chills, hives, dry skin, sores on your skin or mouth, difficulty breathing, cough, increased heart rate, fast or uneven heartbeats,  increased thirst or hunger, fruity smell to your breath, sore throat or flu symptoms, swollen gums, trouble swallowing, increased urination, weight loss.

Common Latuda side effects only require medical attention if they persist or get worse. These include: tremors or shaking, lack of coordination or balance, agitation or restlessness, drowsiness, nausea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Latuda?

Never take extra medication to make up for missing a dose of Latuda. If it's nearly time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose of medicine. Otherwise, you may take your dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Latuda?

Be sure to store Latuda medicine at room temperature, and keep it away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., a bathroom).

What happens if I overdose on Latuda?

Call your local poison control center or seek immediate emergency medical assistance if you suspect overdose.

Warnings

This medication is not intended to be administered to the elderly with dementia, as it increases risk of death. Use caution when administering this medication to children under 18 years of age.

Alcohol will exacerbate certain side effects of this medication, which may become severe. Latuda may make you more sensitive to temperatures, especially extreme hot or cold. This medication may impair your thinking and reactions, so avoid potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) until you know how you're going to react. Additionally, Latuda may cause you to become dizzy or faint if you sit up or stand too quickly.

Taking this medication over the long term may cause an irreversible movement disorder, and the longer you take this medication, the more the risk increases. If you experience uncontrollable movements, talk to your doctor immediately.

It may take some time before you notice your symptoms improving. Do not stop taking Latuda or take extra Latuda medicine without being instructed to by your doctor.

Brand Names

There are currently no generics or alternate brands on the market for the Latuda drug. Because of this, and because Latuda is a specialty medicine, the Latuda retail cost is fairly expensive. However, we offer a good Latuda patient assistance discount with our free Latuda coupon. Simply click Claim Discount to print or download your Latuda coupon or get a savings card today and save 75% at your local pharmacy.
