Lo Loestrin Fe Information:

What is Lo Loestrin Fe?

Lo Loestrin Fe is a combination oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It has the lowest dose of estrogen per pill (10mcg) of all the birth control pills currently available on the market. Lo Loestrin Fe contains norethindrone acetate (progestin), ethinyl estradiol (estrogen), and ferrous fumarate (iron). The two iron pills are taken during menstruation. This medication works by suppressing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. It also changes the mucous of the uterine lining to prevent the implantation of an egg. Lo Loestrin Fe offers a lower possibility of estrogen-related side effects and fewer menstruation days per month (less than four).

How do I take Lo Loestrin Fe?

Use your Lo Loestrin Fe savings card or discount card from HelpRx to buy your pills in your local pharmacy. Decide what time of day you are going to take your pill every day, and keep them in a place you will always be able to take them at that time. If you are not currently using a hormonal contraceptive, start taking Lo Loestrin Fe on the first day of your period. If your period starts on a day other than Sunday, use the day strip label provided that starts with the appropriate day and place it over the days on the dispenser pack. If you are switching from another birth control pill, start Lo Loestrin Fe on the first day you would normally start your next pack of birth control. If you start Lo Loestrin on the first day of your period, or you’re switching from another pill, you will not need to use back-up contraception. Check the Lo Loestrin Fe website or talk to you doctor about switching from other forms of contraception. Do not stop taking your birth control or skip pills, even if it causes nausea or spotting.

Before taking Lo Loestrin Fe, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of stroke or heart attack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lo Loestrin Fe?

If you miss one dose of Lo Loestrin Fe, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Then take your next dose at the regular time. You do not need back-up contraception in this case. If you miss two pills in a row in week 1 or 2, take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the next day to catch up. You will need to use back-up contraception for 7 days. If you miss 2 or more pills in weeks 3 or 4 (other than the brown pills), throw out the pack and start a new pack the same day you remember. You will skip a period and you will have to use back-up contraception for 7 days.
