Vagifem Information:

What is Vagifem?

Vagifem is a form of estrogen, called estradiol. Estradiol is a sex hormone your body naturally produces. Doctors prescribe estradiol to treat the vaginal discomfort that typically occurs during menopause. These types of discomfort include vaginal dryness, soreness, and itchiness. Symptoms can also include pain during intercourse, and painful urination.

How do I take Vagifem?

Print your free Vagifem coupon off of HelpRx before you visit the pharmacy. It comes in 10 mcg pills, which the patient inserts into the vagina using a plastic applicator. Insert the applicator until it is halfway inside your vagina, or as far as it can comfortably be inserted. Compress the plastic plunger completely. This will insert the Vagifem tablet into your vagina, where it will dissolve into your vaginal lining.

Before taking Vagifem, tell your doctor if:

  • You currently have or have had any form of cancer.
  • You have unusual vaginal bleeding.
  • You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
  • You currently have or have had blood clots.
  • You have ever experienced liver problems or have liver disease.
  • You have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Vagifem.
  • You think you may be pregnant.

What are the possible side effects of taking Vagifem?

The most common side effects of Vagifem included headache, breast pain, irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, stomach or abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea and vomiting, hair loss, fluid retention, and yeast infection.

Long-term use of estrogen products can increase the risk of developing certain conditions, including:

  • Increased chance of blood clots, hear attacks, strokes, and dementia
  • Increased chance of liver problems or gallbladder disease
  • Higher risk of high blood pressure and high blood sugar

What if I forget to take a dose of Vagifem?

Ask your doctor to prescribe a course of action if you forget to take a dose of Vagifem.

How do I store Vagifem?

Keep Vagifem out of reach of children. Store at room temperature. Do not refrigerate.

What happens if I overdose on Vagifem?

Vagifem comes in convenient, measured doses. Do not take more than prescribed be your doctor. Symptoms of an overdose would include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, abdominal pain, drowsiness and fatigue, and vaginal bleeding. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your physician for a specific course of action and discontinue use of Vagifem.

Warnings

Vagifem should be taken in the lowest dose possible, for the shortest possible length of time. Continue to check with your doctor to make sure you should continue using Vagifem. Tell your doctor if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • breast lumps
  • vaginal bleeding
  • sudden new severe headaches
  • changes in vision or speech

Using estrogen increases your chances of getting cancer of the uterus or ovary. If you experience any vaginal bleeding post-menopause, contact your doctor, as this may be a sign of cancer.
