What is Vituz?
Vituz is a brand name for a prescription-only antitussive, antihistamine/opioid class medication; it combines chlorpheniramine maleate (an antihistamine) with hydrocodone bitartrate (and opioid) to treat the symptoms of colds and allergies, including runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and watery eyes. Chlorpheniramine works by reducing histamine and its symptoms, while hydrocodone suppresses the coughing center of the brain.
How do I take Vituz?
Vituz is a liquid medication that is taken orally in 5ml doses every 4 to 6 hours as needed. No more than four doses should be taken in a 24-hour period. However, the amount taken and frequency of dosing will be determined by your healthcare provider. This medication is typically taken only as long as it is needed.
Before taking Vituz, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to chlorpheniramine maleate, hydrocodone bitartrate, or any of the ingredients in Vituz
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements;

What are the possible side effects of taking Vituz?
Mild side effects of Vituz may include dizziness or lightheadedness, chest congestion, appetite loss, euphoria, anxiety, dry mouth, nose, or throat, constipation, drowsiness, headache, nausea, constricted pupils, and vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include slowed heartrate, urination problems, chest tightness, problems urinating, arrhythmia, or vision problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Vituz?
If you are taking Vituz on an as-needed basis, take a missed dose as soon as you remember and are able. If you are on a dosing schedule and you miss a dose, follow the instructions that accompany the prescription. Do not take more medication or increase the frequency of dosing to make up for a missed one. Do not take more than four doses (20ml) in a 24-hour period.
How do I store Vituz?
Keep Vituz tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the liquid to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Vituz?
If an overdose of Vituz is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose may include seizures, slowed heartbeat, dilated or constricted pupils, extreme tiredness, and cold, clammy, or blue skin.

Vituz is not recommended for anyone under 18. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Vituz may cause drowsiness or dizziness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. Drinking alcohol while taking Vituz can exacerbate the side effects.
