What is Zetia?

Zetia, or ezetimibe, is a cholesterol-lowering medication that works differently than statin cholesterol medications. Statins help to lower cholesterol by inhibiting its production in the liver. Zetia works in the digestive tract to stop the absorption of cholesterol from food into the small intestine. A decrease in cholesterol absorption or intake also stimulates cells to uptake more LDL cholesterol, leading to a decrease in levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood plasma. Zetia may also be used to lower elevated levels of sitosterol and campesterol.

Call your doctor at once if you experience a rare or serious side effect such as unusual muscle pain or tenderness, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, chest pain, fever, severe skin rash, and pancreatitis (severe pain in the upper abdomen that spreads to the back, nausea, vomiting, and elevated heart rate).

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Zetia?

If you forget to take a dose of Zetia, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take two doses in the same day to compensate for a missed one.

• Storage

How do I store Zetia?

Store Zetia in an airtight container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets and protect it from excessive heat and moisture.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Zetia?

There have been no reports of serious adverse effects from a Zetia overdose. If you or someone you knows has taken an excessive amount of medication, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
