Actigall Information:
What is Actigall?
Actigall is the drug ursodiol, a bile duct acid prescribed to dissolve gallstones in those who cannot have, or do not want to have, surgery. It is also prescribed to overweight individuals who are in a rapid-weight loss program to prevent gallstone formation. It may also be prescribed to treat primary biliary cirrhosis. Actigall works by decreasing the amount of cholesterol that is produced in the liver and absorbed by the intestines to break down gallstones and prevent their formation.
How do I take Actigall?
Actigall is administered in capsule form and taken orally with water without regard for food. The frequency of dosing will depend on the condition being treated. Carefully follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription. Do not break, crush, split, or chew the capsule. It will take several months before this medication delivers its intended effect, and a patient may have to take it for up to two years. Continue to take this medication for the duration of the prescription or until your doctor stops the dosing.
Before taking Actigall, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to ursodiol or any of the ingredients in Actigall;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements;
- You are taking clofibrate, cholestyramine, antacids containing aluminum, colestipol, cholesterol lowering or lipid lowering medications, or estrogen-based medications;
- You have, or have had, a bile duct disease, pancreas of gall bladder disease, or liver disease.
What are the possible side effects of taking Actigall?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Actigall. Less severe symptoms include back pain, constipation, coughing, diarrhea, dizziness, hair loss, indigestion, joint or muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Actigall patient assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), coughing accompanied by a fever, or frequent or painful urination.
What if I forget to take a dose of Actigall?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Actigall, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Actigall?
Keep the Actigall drug tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Actigall?
If an overdose of Actigall is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for patient assistance.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Actigall. This medication may not completely dissolve your gallstones or, if dissolved, they may return within five years.
