What is Aerospan?
Aerospan is an inhaled medication that contains the corticosteroid flunisolide. Aerospan is prescribed for maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 6 years old and older. It is not to be used for stopping an asthma attack or acute bronchospasm. Patients should carry another medication for emergency purposes.
How do I take Aerospan?
Aerospan comes in a metered dose inhaler and is normally used twice daily for maintenance treatment. To use the inhaler, pull the purple actuator out from the gray spacer. The device should snap into an L shape. To prime the inhaler, shake it well and release two test sprays into the air. If you don’t use the inhaler for two weeks or longer, it will need to be primed again. Exhale completely, then place the mouth piece of the inhaler between your lips and seal your lips around it. Do not block the inhaler with your tongue or teeth. Press down completely on the gray top of the inhaler while you inhale deeply through your mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds and then slowly exhale. If your doctor has prescribed two inhalations, wait 20 seconds and then repeat. Rinse your mouth and spit in the sink after each use. Do not swallow this medication.
Before taking Aerospan, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any medications or any of the ingredients in Aerospan.
- You have or have had glaucoma or cataracts.
- You have a fungal infection besides a skin infection.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially aspirin, NSAIDs, arthritis medications, antifungals, birth control pills, phenobarbital, rifampin, digoxin, estrogen, diuretics and theophylline.
- You are taking any vitamins or oral supplements.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have ever had kidney or liver disease.
- You have diabetes or high blood pressure.
- You have an underactive thyroid.
- You have osteoporosis.
- You experience seizures
- You have ulcers or any intestinal diseases.
What are the possible side effects of taking Aerospan?
Possible side effects from using Aerospan include headache, sinus pain, couching, sore throat runny nose and headaches. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, report them to your doctor. Other more serious side effects include infections, white patches on the inside of your mouth, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and nausea or vomiting. Report any serious side effects to your doctor as soon as possible. Aerospan can increase your risk of developing osteoporosis, glaucoma and cataracts. It can also cause delayed or slow growth in children. Consult your doctor if you suspect any of these problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Aerospan?
If you miss a dose of Aerospan, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Aerospan?
Store your Aerospan inhaler at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The contents of this inhaler are under pressure. Do not allow the canister to be punctured and keep it away from high temperatures and direct sunlight. The canister may explode if exposed to excessive temperatures. Do not allow it to freeze.
What happens if I overdose on Aerospan?
In clinical studies, 9 times the maximum dose of Aerospan was administered in a three-hour period, and no serious effects were observed. If this medication is accidentally ingested in large amounts or an excessive amount has been inhaled, consult the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Prolonged use of corticosteroids such as Aerospan can increase your propensity to infections. Wash your hands frequently and try to stay away from people that are sick with contagious infections. Tell your doctor if your asthma symptoms get worse.
