What is Amethia Lo?

Amethia Lo is a low-dose, extended cycle birth control. It contains .1mg of levonorgestrel (progestin) and .02mg of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). One pack contains 84 pills with both hormones and 7 pills with just .01mg of ethinyl estradiol. Amethia Lo works to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation and changing cervical mucous and the uterine lining. It makes it more difficult for the sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

How do I take Amethia Lo?

Amethia Lo should be taken at the same time every day. Pick a time of day that is easiest for you to remember to take your pill, and take one pill per day until the pack is finished. Birth control pills are most effective when they are taken at the same time each day. The pill may be taken with or without food. Depending on which day you start Amethia Lo and which birth control you were using previously, you may have to use back-up contraception for 7 days. Talk to your doctor about whether or not you need to use back-up contraception.

Before taking Amethia Lo, tell your doctor if:

• You smoke cigarettes.
• You have heart disease or high blood pressure.
• You’ve ever had a stroke or heart attack.
• You have diabetes and/or circulatory problems.
• You get migraine headaches.
• You’ve ever had breast cancer or other cancers of the reproductive system.
• You have liver tumors or liver disease.
• You have ever had blood clots or have a clotting disorder.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You have a cerebrovascular disease.
• You are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting.
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Amethia Lo or any similar drugs.
• You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, including St. John’s wort, vitamin C, medications that affect hormones, blood thinners, oral steroids, antibiotics, antifungals, blood pressure medications, NSAIDs and thyroid drugs.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Amethia Lo?

Possible side effects from taking Amethia Lo are similar to the side effects of taking other birth control pills. These include nausea, irregular bleeding or spotting, breast tenderness, mood changes, weight gain and headaches. These side effects should lessen over time. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor. Serious but rare side effects that you should report immediately include pain in the chest, left arm or jaw; swelling and warmth in the calf or groin area, numbness or tingling on one side of the body, depression, confusion and slurred speech.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Amethia Lo?

If you forget to take one of your Amethia Lo pills, take the missed dose as soon as you remember and take your next pill at the usual time the next day. If you miss two orange pills in a row, take two pills the day you remember and two pills the following day to catch up. You must use back-up contraception for 7 days. If you miss three or more orange pills, skip the missed pills and continue to take one per day at your regular time. You will need to use back up contraception for 7 days. If you miss any of the yellow pills, you can throw them out and skip them. There is no need to use back-up contraception. If you have any doubts about missed pills, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How do I store Amethia Lo?

Amethia Lo pills should be stored in their packs and kept at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your pills in a place where you will remember to take them, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Amethia Lo?

There have been no reports of adverse effects from overdose on Amethia Lo. If you are experiencing severe side effects because you have taken extra pills, talk to your doctor. If someone else accidentally swallow a large number of pills, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
