What is Auvi-Q?
Auvi-Q in an injection containing epinephrine used to treat anaphylaxis from allergic reactions. These types of injections are expensive. Auvi-Q works by relaxing the muscles in the airways which allows the patient to breathe more easily.
How do I use Auvi-Q?
If you are prone to anaphylactic shock, you should carry your Auvi-Q pen with you at all times. At the first sign of a severe reaction (wheezing, difficulty breathing, hives, severe abdominal pain), prepare to use your Auvi-Q pen. Your doctor or pharmacist should show you exactly how to use it when it is prescribed. To use the pen, remove the safety cap on the end. Press the end of the injected that contains the needle into your outer thigh muscle. The needle will shoot out into the skin. Hold the injector in place for several seconds to make sure the epinephrine has dispersed. This needle will penetrate the clothing if needed, so there is no need to remove it in an emergency. More medication, such as Benadryl, may be need to stop a reaction and you may need medical attention after such a reaction occurs. Anaphylaxis may reoccur. Before using Auvi-Q , tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to epinephrine, any of the ingredients in Auvi-Q, or any other medications.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs.
- You have or have ever had diabetes, high blood pressure, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, hyperthyroidism, depression or mental illness, or Parkinson’s disease.
- You have arthritis or difficulty using your hands at times.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Auvi-Q?
Side effects from using the Auvi-Q injection may include: pounding, uneven or accelerated heart rate, nausea, vomiting, headache, anxiety, restlessness, turning pale, weakness, sweating, shaking or tremors and dizziness. If you continue to experience difficulty breathing, get emergency care at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of Auvi-Q?
Auvi-Q is not taken on a regular basis and so it is not possible to miss a dose. If you use your Auvi-Q pens, be sure to get replacement pens as soon as possible.
How do I store Auvi-Q?
Auvi-Q autoinjectors should be stored between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the injectors in a safe place out of reach of children, and keep them out of the light. Make sure the solution inside is clear and colorless. It if has become discolored or cloudy, Dispose of it properly. Do not leave used or exposed needles in the trash. Bring your used or unused Auvi-Q pens to your doctor’s office or a nearby hospital to dispose of them properly.
What happens if I overdose on Auvi-Q?
Symptoms of epinephrine overdose include difficulty speaking, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, accelerate breathing, cold and pale skin, shortness of breath, confusion and decreased urination. The Auvi-Q pen is automatically set to give the right dose. Overdose should not occur unless more than one pen is used. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed, seek emergency medical attention at once.
Warnings
You should seek emergency medical treatment following a severe allergic reaction. If anyone accidentally injects epinephrine, they should also go to the hospital right away.
