Bactroban Nasal Information:
Bactroban Nasal is mupirocin, an antibiotic drug in ointment form prescribed to treat bacterial infections of the nose. It works by blocking the production of essential proteins that bacteria need to survive. It is not effective for treating viral or fungal infections.
The Bactroban Nasal medicine is a topical ointment that is applied inside the nose. It is dispensed in single-use tubes. Gently wash and dry the affected area and apply half of the contents of a tube directly into one nostril, and the other half into the other. Press the sides of the nose together and massage for about a minute to properly spread the medicine. Dispose of the tube after application and thoroughly wash your hands. Typical dosing is two or three times a day for one or two weeks. However, your healthcare provider will determine the actual dosing regimen. Do not allow the medication to come in contact with your eyes or with burned or broken skin.
Before taking Bactroban Nasal, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to mupirocin or any of the ingredients in the Bactroban Nasal drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are using other nasal medications or products
- You have, or have had, kidney disease
There is the possibility that side effects may occur while using Bactroban Nasal. Minor side effects may include mild burning or stinging, change in sense of taste, cough, headache, stuffy nose, or sore throat. If these symptoms appear and persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, or severe irritation at the application site. Also, pseudomembranous colitis (a severe form of diarrhea) is a possible side effect of any antibiotic. Contact your doctor if you develop sudden and severe diarrhea.
If you forget to apply the scheduled dose of your Bactroban Nasal medicine, do it as soon as you remember and are able. If it is almost time for the next dose, though, skip the one missed and resume the normal routine. Do not increase the amount applied or change the schedule to make up for a missed dose.
Keep Bactroban Nasal tightly sealed in its original tubing, out of the reach of children and away from temperature and humidity extremes. Do not allow the ointment to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired amount according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
Bactroban Nasal is for external use only. If you accidentally ingest it or apply too much, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
