What is benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
Benazepril hydrochlorothiazide (also known as benazepril Hct) is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, and is actually two medications. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels and increases blood and oxygen supplies by blocking substances that cause veins and arteries to tighten. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic and increases urine flow, working with the kidneys to remove water and salts that can contribute to high blood pressure and the problems that it causes.
How do I take benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
Benazepril hydrochlorothiazide is an oral medication in tablet form, taken once a day at the same time each day. Your doctor may also prescribe a low-salt or low-sodium diet as well as exercise in conjunction with this medication.
Before taking benazepril hydrochlorothiazide, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to benazepril or hydrochlorothiazide;
- You are taking any medications, especially aliskiren;
- You have diabetes
- You have recently experienced vomiting or severe diarrhea;
- You have had heart failure, kidney disease, or live disease;
- You have asthma;
- You have (or have had) gout, scleroderma, or lupus;
- You are allergic to any medications
- You are taking potassium supplements;
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or a nursing; or
- You sweat excessively.
What are the possible side effects of taking benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
Benazepril hydrochlorothiazide may cause side effects, some more severe than others. Less serious side effects include nausea, headache, coughing, nausea, dizziness, constipation, an increase in sweating, or a mild skin rash. Contact your physician if these persist or become increase in intensity.
More severe side effects include increased potassium levels, easy bruising, eye pain or problems with vision, jaundice or signs of jaundice, fever, severe headache accompanied by a rash, peeling, or blistering skin, and difficulty breathing. There may be other side effects as well. If you experience any of these, contact your physician immediately.
Finally, if you exhibit signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, rash, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat, or have difficulty swallowing or breathing, contact your physician immediately and contact emergency services at 911.
What if I forget to take a dose of benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
If you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose of benazepril hydrochlorothiazide take it as soon as your remember. However, if the time is near for you next dose, forego the missed one and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
How do I store benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
Store benazepril hydrochlorothiazide in its original container and keep it out of the reach of children. Keep it away from extremes of heat, cold, and humidity, and out of direct sunlight. Dispose of unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on benazepril hydrochlorothiazide?
If you, or the patient, take an overdose of benazepril hydrochlorothiazide, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or stopped breathing, call Emergency Services at 911 immediately.
Warnings
Discontinue using benazepril hydrochlorothiazide if you become pregnant, and inform your doctor. Seek approval from a doctor before taking salt substitutes or potassium substitutes. This medication does not cure the conditions for which it is prescribed, so continue taking it even if you are feeling well.
