Brimonidine Tartrate Information:
What is brimonidine tartrate?
Brimonidine tartrate is a topical medication in solution form that reduces eye pressure in those suffering from ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma (a condition that can cause nerve damage to the eye and lead to a loss of vision). Specifically, it is classified as an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, an intraocular pressure-lowering agent that decreases the amount of fluid in the eyes. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other medications.
How do I take brimonidine tartrate?
Brimonidine tartrate is a liquid applied to the affected eye using an eyedropper, typically administered three times a day over a twenty-four hour period, preferably in eight-hour increments. The usual dosage is one drop, but your doctor may alter this.
Before using this product, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap, and check the dispensing end of the dropper for damage (replace if necessary). To instill this medication, tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid. Hold the dropper, with the medication in its tube, just above the surface of the eye and squeeze a single drop into the space between the lower lid and the surface of the eye. Close the eye and tilt your head down, facing the floor. Hold this position for two or three minutes, then lift your head and gently apply pressure to the tear duct. Dry off any excess medication from your face.
Wait at least five minutes before instilling another drop (if prescribed) or before applying any other topical medications you may be taking.
Before taking brimonidine tartrate, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to brimonidine tartrate;
- You wear contact lenses;
- You are allergic to any medications;
