What is Brintellix?
Brintellix (vortioxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which is a class of antidepressants that allows your brain to utilize the serotonin in your brain more efficiently, allowing your mood to remain balanced or even improve. It is used to treat MDD (major depressive disorder) in adults.
How do I take Brintellix?
Always take Brintellix as prescribed. Your doctor may tweak your regimen to improve results, but you should not take more or less than instructed. Continue taking this medication even if you feel fine. Often, Brintellix is prescribed to be taken one time daily by mouth, with or without food.
Before taking Brintellix, tell your doctor if:
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
• You are being given linezolid or methylene blue injections.
• You are currently taking an MAOI or NSAID medication.
• You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially St. John's Wart, diuretics, antiarrhythmic medications, blood thinners, certain antibiotics or tuberculosis medications, seizure or migraine medications, and other antidepressants.
• You have a bleeding or clotting disorder.
• You have glaucoma.
• You have or have a history of liver disease or disorder.
• You have low levels of sodium.
• You have previously had suicidal ideations or attempts.
What are the possible side effects of taking Brintellix?
Some severe side effects require immediate medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (hives, trouble breathing, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), unusual bleeding or bruising, coughing up blood, racing thoughts, unusual and extreme mood shifts, decreased need for sleep, hallucinations, overactive reflexes, fast heart rate, fainting, vomiting and diarrhea, loss of coordination, extremely low sodium, slurred speech, blurry vision, seeing halos around lights, eye pain or swelling.
Common Brintellix side effects include: mild nausea or vomiting, constipation, vision changes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Brintellix?
Never take extra Brintellix medication to make up for a missed dose. If it's almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take it as soon as you remember.
How do I store Brintellix?
Keep Brintellix at room temperature and away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., a bathroom). Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Brintellix?
Symptoms of overdose include: diarrhea, dizziness, flushing, itchiness, nausea, somnolence, stomach pain. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical assistance or call your local poison control center.
Warnings
Suddenly discontinuing Brintellix may lead to withdrawal effects.
Brintellix is not approved for children. This medication can alter your thinking or reactions. Do not perform potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) until you know how you will respond to taking it.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Brintellix. Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, especially suicidal ideations but also including unusual aggression or risk-taking behaviors, extreme mood changes, unusual impulsiveness, trouble sleeping, or hyperactivity. Teens and young adults may be more susceptible to this type of thinking.
