Clobex Information:
What is Clobex?
Clobex is a topical cortiscosteroid that can be used to treat scalp or body plaque psoriasis for up to 4 weeks. The Clobex lotion can also be used to treat eczema and dermatitis for up to 2 weeks. When applied as prescribed to the affected areas, it helps to slow the body’s overactive immune response and to shrink the skin’s blood vessels, reducing the appearance of psoriasis.
How do I take Clobex?
Clobex lotion is typically applied to your skin twice daily. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying, and only apply as much as you need to cover the affected area (usually less than a teaspoon). The spray is also generally used twice a day and should be applied in a thin film to the affected area. Do not get the spray in your eyes, nose, or mouth. The shampoo is usually applied to the scalp once a day. Your hair should be dry, and you should move it away from your scalp in order to rub a small amount of the shampoo into the affected area. Leave the shampoo in for 15 minutes before adding water, lathering, and rinsing. Always wash your hands after using any of the Clobex products.
Before using Clobex, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to the Clobex drug or any other steroids
- You have any other known allergies
- You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You are using any skin products, cosmetics, vitamins, or herbal supplements
- You may have a scalp or skin infection, or any open sores around the affected area
- You have a history of poor blood circulation or diabetes
- You have any other skin conditions
- You have a history of immune system problems
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of using Clobex?
Some patients experience itching, dryness, burning, stinging, or redness when they first apply the medication. These symptoms usually go away within a couple days, but if they do not, alert your doctor. Most people do not experience any serious Clobex drug side effects, but in some rare cases, patients have reported skin discoloration, unusual hair growth, acne, hair bumps, or stretch marks. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these uncommon side effects.
What if I forget to apply a dose of Clobex?
If you forget to apply Clobex at the usual time, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, simply continue with your normal dosage schedule. Do not try to apply more of any of the Clobex products to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Clobex?
Keep all Clobex drug products at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit), removed from heat and moisture (be sure to keep the spray away from open flame, as it is flammable). Do not store your medication in the bathroom and, as with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of pets and children. If you need to discard unused products, talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of this drug.
What happens if I overdose on Clobex?
Because it is a topical medication, overdosing on the Clobex drug is uncommon. However, this medicine can be very harmful if it is ingested. If you or anyone in your household has swallowed Clobex, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
Warnings
Because Clobex has been shown to suppress the HPA axis, it should not be used for more than 4 weeks, and it should never be used by children under the age of 18. Corticosteroids such as Clobex can also change the way your body responds to physical stress, so if you are scheduled to undergo surgery or you have a serious illness or injury, tell your doctor that you are using this medication.
