Clomipramine Information:
What is clomipramine?
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant. It helps restore the balance of certain brain chemicals, including serotonin, to reduce unwanted thoughts and compulsions to perform repetitive actions in people with OCD.
How do I take clomipramine?
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully; your doctor may start you at a low dose and gradually increase it to find the best dose for you. Take clomipramine at the same time every day to make it easier to remember. If you are prone to stomach upset, take your medication with food. Don’t suddenly stop taking clomipramine without talking to your doctor; abruptly quitting may cause you to experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Before taking clomipramine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this drug or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines or supplements
- You have used an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days
- You have liver or kidney disease
- You have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or any other mental illness
- You have any thyroid problems
- You have a history of head injury or seizures
- You have a history of alcohol abuse
- You have heart disease
- You have glaucoma
- You have low blood pressure
- You have urination problems
- You have any breathing problems (such as asthma)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy
What are the possible side effects of taking clomipramine?
The clomipramine drug may cause dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, upset stomach, changes in appetite or weight, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, increased sweating, or decreased libido. Monitor all side effects and tell your doctor if you have any conditions that get worse or last a long time. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects: vision changes, extreme paranoia, thoughts of self-harm, difficulty urinating, elevated heart rate, tremors, muscle rigidity, severe lightheadedness, fainting, or seizures. This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and you should always seek the help of a medical professional if you have any adverse effects that concern you.
What if I forget to take a dose of clomipramine?
Take the missed dose once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing regimen. Don’t take 2 doses at once; taking more medication than you’ve been prescribed increases your risk for side effects.
How do I store clomipramine?
Store clomipramine at room temperature; do not keep it in the bathroom since exposure to heat and moisture can alter the medication. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of children and pets, and ask your pharmacist how to throw out unused or expired capsules safely.
What happens if I overdose on clomipramine?
Overdose symptoms may include an irregular heart rate, extreme dizziness, fainting, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention if you or someone in your home has overdosed on clomipramine.
Warnings
Don’t eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking clomipramine; grapefruit may increase the amount of the drug absorbed into your bloodstream. You should also avoid alcoholic beverages since alcohol increases your risk of side effects. Clomipramine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you know you can do so safely.
