Cyproheptadine Information:
What is cyproheptadine?
Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine prescribed to treat symptoms of allergies and certain allergic reactions. It may also be prescribed to treat the symptoms of Cushing’s Syndrome or some types of headaches, including migraines. Cyproheptadine works by blocking the effects of histamines, the substances in the body responsible for allergic reactions.
How do I take cyproheptadine?
Cyproheptadine is administered as a tablet or syrup. Both forms are taken orally two or three times daily, depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s medical profile. This medication may be taken with or without food. Follow the dosing instructions exactly and do not take more or less than the prescribed amount.
Before taking cyproheptadine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to antihistamines or any of the ingredients in the cyproheptadine medicine
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have asthma
- You have glaucoma
- You have problems urinating
- You have or have had ulcers
- You have heart disease or hypertension
- You have an overactive thyroid
- You have a history of seizures
- You are 65 or older
What are the possible side effects of taking cyproheptadine?
Instances of side effects have been reported by some who have taken the cyproheptadine drug. Mild side effects may include chest congestion, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nose, or throat, agitation (particularly in children), headache, muscle weakness, and nausea. If any of these symptoms appear, monitor them and contact your doctor if they persist or worsen. Severe side effects such as nervousness, changes in vision, or problems urinating require immediate medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of cyproheptadine?
If you forget to take the scheduled dose of your cyproheptadine medicine, do so as soon as you remember and are able, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In this situation, skip the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the amount taken or change the schedule to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store cyproheptadine?
Keep both cyrpoheptadine pills and the syrup securely sealed at room temperature in the original packaging and out of the reach of children. Do not allow the syrup to freeze. Consult your pharmacist for information on the proper disposal of unused or expired doses.
What happens if I overdose on cyproheptadine?
If it is believed someone has taken an overdose of the cyproheptadine drug, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
