What is DermOtic?
DermOtic treats eczema---a condition characterized by itchiness and red or flaking skin—when it occurs in the outer ear. This medication contains fluocinolone, a type of corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and other related eczema symptoms. DermOtic is only available in the form of ear drops.
How do I use DermOtic?
Always wash your hands before using DermOtic. Tilt your affected ear upward and hold your earlobe down and back. Hold the dropper over the ear, without touching the dropper tip to the ear itself. Carefully squeeze the prescribed number of drops into your ear and keep your head tilted for about a minute to prevent the drops from leaking out. Repeat with the other ear if your doctor has told you to do so.
Before using DermOtic, tell your doctor if:
- You have any food or drug allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medicines, vitamins, or supplements
- You have an ear infection
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of using DermOtic?
Serious side effects with DermOtic are very rare. However, this medication may cause mild burning, dryness, redness, stinging, or irritation when first applied. If this irritation lasts a long time or become severe, tell your doctor right away. Get emergency medical attention if you have any signs of a severe allergic reaction.
What if I forget to use a dose of DermOtic?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose time. In this case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Don’t use more ear drops than you normally would for a single dose.
How do I store DermOtic?
Don’t let the DermOtic dropper touch any surfaces, and keep the bottle tightly sealed in between doses. Store your medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of children. If you no longer need your ear drops or they have expired, check with your pharmacist to find out how to safely dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on DermOtic?
You are unlikely to overdose on DermOtic when applying it to your ears, but this corticosteroid may be harmful if swallowed. If you are someone in your home has ingested some of this medicine, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.
Warnings
Tell your doctor your complete medical and allergy history before using DermOtic. Some formulations of this medicine may contain inactive ingredients, such as peanut oil, that can trigger allergic reactions in certain individuals. Never share your medication with anyone else.
Brand Names
DermOtic is a brand name drug; its generic equivalent is fluocinolone. In many cases, fluocinolone is less expensive, and your doctor may allow you to switch to the generic form to save money.
