Digoxin Information:
What is digoxin?
Digoxin is a medication derived from the foxglove plant, digitalis lantana. Medicinal use of derivatives of digitalis plants can be dated back to 1785. Digoxin uses mainly include the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. The medication is classified as a cardiac glycoside. These glycosides work by inhibiting the sodium-potassium pump in the myocardium or muscle of the heart. This increases the availability of calcium causing the myocardial muscle to contract with greater force, increasing cardiac output and myocardial efficiency. Digoxin also decreases the refractory period of the atria and ventricles while increasing the sinoatrial and AV nodes. Cardiac glycosides can be toxic when used incorrectly, and the patient’s plasma digoxin concentration should be monitored, as should be potassium levels.
How do I take digoxin?
Buy digoxin from your local pharmacy with a coupon from HelpRx. Digoxin medication comes in 125mcg or 250mcg tablets. Your doctor may start you on a loading dose or higher doses of digoxin before prescribing a maintenance dose. Maintenance doses of digoxin are based on body weight and taken orally once daily at the same time every day. Follow any dietary instructions provided by your doctor such as eating a low-sodium diet or adding more potassium to your diet.
Before taking digoxin, tell your doctor if:
- You have irregular thyroid levels.
- You have ever had kidney problems or kidney disease.
- You have cancer or other heart problems besides the one for which you are being prescribed digoxin medication.
- You are allergic to any medications or herbal supplements.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially corticosteroids, antacids, antibiotics, thyroid medications, other medications for heart or blood pressure problems, anxiety medications, cold or cough medicines, calcium, and other vitamins or supplements.

Possible digoxin side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, mild nausea, headache, mild rash, loss of appetite, diarrhea and blurred vision. More serious side effects include irregular heartbeat, swelling of the hands or feet, vomiting, stomach pain, hallucinations, confusion, and persistent blurred or yellowed vision. If you experience any severe or persistent digoxin side effects, report them to your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of digoxin?
Take a missed dose of digoxin as soon as you remember it. However, if it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take a double dose of digoxin to make up for a missed one.
How do I store digoxin?
Store digoxin medication in a child-proof container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
