Dutasteride Information:
Dutasteride is classified as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, a benign prostatic hypertrophy agent, prescribed to treat BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). It may also be prescribed with other medications to treat this condition. It works by preventing the body from converting testosterone into dihydrotesterone, helping to improve the flow of urine. It may also reduce the need for prostate surgery.
Dutasteride is administered as a capsule that is taken orally, once a day, with water and without regard for food. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, split, or chew it. Follow the instructions that accompanied your prescription exactly and do not discontinue taking dutasteride without first notifying your doctor.
Before taking dutasteride, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to dutasteride, finasteride, or any of the ingredients in the dutasteride capsule
- Your spouse is pregnant or you are planning a pregnancy
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, prostate cancer
- You have liver disease
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking the dutasteride drug. Mild side effects include erectile dysfunction, diminished sex drive, and ejaculation problems. Should any of these conditions appear and persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Severe side effects, including signs of an allergic reaction, peeling skin, an increase in breast size, or the development of breast pain, lumps, or a nipple discharge, require immediate medical care.
If you miss a dose of dutasteride, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if you do not remember until the following day, skip the one missed and resume the regular regimen. Do not increase the number of capsules taken or alter the schedule to make up for a missed dose.
Keep dutasteride tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from temperature and humidity extremes; do not store it in the bathroom. Discuss with your pharmacist the proper method for disposing of expired or unused capsules.
Should an overdose of the dutasteride drug occur, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Dutasteride is for men only. Because the medication can be absorbed through the skin, this medication should not be handled by women and children. If a pregnant woman handles dutasteride, birth defects can result. Do not donate blood while taking this medication or for six months after stopping its use. If the capsule is opened or broken before being swallowed, it can irritate the lips, mouth, or throat. Discuss with your doctor the efficacy of eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
Dutasteride is a generic medication that is also marketed as Avodart; it is also available in a combination with tamsulosin under the brand Jalyn. However, do not substitute these for one another without written medical permission.
