Enoxaparin Information:
What is enoxaparin?
Enoxaparin is an anticoagulant drug of the heparin class that is prescribed to those who will be bedridden after undergoing hip or knee replacement, or other surgical procedures, in order to prevent blood clots. It may also be used to treat blood clots that already exist or to prevent complications arising from a heart attack. It works by preventing the formation of blood-clotting substances in the blood.
How do I take enoxaparin?
Enoxaparin is administered by subcutaneous injection for up to fourteen days; the frequency of daily injections is determined by the condition being treated. If you are self-injecting this medication at home, follow the instructions of your physician. Do not inject enoxaparin into muscle tissue. Wash hands and the injection site before and after administration. Do not inject the medication into the same location twice in a row. Do not use enoxaparin if its color has changed or there is particulate matter in the solution. Do not mix this drug with other medications. Safely dispose of a syringe once it has been used.
Before taking enoxaparin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to enoxaparin, heparin, pork products, or any of the ingredients in this medication
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking anti-coagulants or NSAIDs (including aspirin)
- You have, or have had, a spinal tap, spinal surgery, or a spinal catheter
- You have had brain surgery, eye surgery, or have vision problems due to diabetes
- You have, or have had, kidney disease, heart disease, low platelet count, bacterial endocarditis, bleeding disorders, a stroke, ulcers, or an artificial heart valve
What are the possible side effects of taking enoxaparin?
Some individuals have reported side effects after injecting the enoxaparin drug. Mild side effects include irritation or minor pain at the injection site, fever, diarrhea, or nausea. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include numb, tingling, or weak legs, leg paralysis, loss of bladder or bowel control, signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching; swelling of the lips, face, mouth, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), swollen feet or ankles, unusual bleeding or bruising, darkly colored urine, or black or bloody stools.
What if I forget to take a dose of enoxaparin?
If you miss your scheduled dose of enoxaparin, inject it as soon as you remember and are able unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, forego the one that was missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the quantity or change the frequency of doses to compensate for a missed injection.
How do I store enoxaparin?
Store enoxaparin and syringes in their original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of heat and humidity. Do not let this medication freeze. Dispose of any unused or outdated amounts according to the instructions of your pharmacist. Dispose of used syringes per local health regulations.
What happens if I overdose on enoxaparin?
If an overdose of the enoxaparin drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Enoxaparin may cause blood clots in those undergoing an epidural, spinal puncture, or similar treatment. This medication may increase the risk of thrombocytopenia or hemorrhage. Because enoxaparin keeps blood from clotting, it may take longer for cuts to stop bleeding. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this drug.
Brand Names
The generic anticoagulant enoxaparin is marketed under the brand names Lovenox, Lovenox HP, Clexane, and Clexane Forte. However, neither the generic nor the brands may be substituted for each other without the written permission of your healthcare provider. To keep enoxaparin costs low, HelpRx has a reusable enoxaparin coupon, or discount card, available on our website that can lower the price by up to 37% when presented at a local pharmacy.
