Enoxaparin Sodium Information:
What is enoxaparin sodium?
Enoxaparin sodium is a low molecular weight heparin used to treat pulmonary embolisms and other blood clots, as well as to prevent thromboembolic complications following certain kinds of major surgery, especially in patients requiring extended bed rest. It is sometimes prescribed to patients on bed rest from other serious conditions, and is often combined with warfarin, another anticoagulant, to prevent deep venous thrombosis. Sometimes it may be combined with aspirin to treat complications of heart disease.
How do I take an enoxaparin sodium injection?
Enoxaparin sodium is often administered in the hospital by a medical professional, however, if your doctor prescribes enoxaparin injections at home, always follow their instructions on how to measure (if necessary) and inject your medication. Do not take more or less than prescribed, and do not discontinue your medication direction from your doctor, even if you feel well.
Number of doses, the amount of each dose, and how often you should take your doses is determined by your doctor based on your body and which conditions or situations are being treated. Always follow your doctor's instructions.
Many prescriptions are offered as prefilled enoxaparin sodium injection syringes, and most prescriptions last for 2 weeks. Always use a different spot to inject your medication, and inject your medication in the way you've been shown. Enoxaparin injections are not intended for intramuscular injection.
Before taking enoxaparin sodium, tell your doctor if:
- You're about to have surgery involving an epidural or in cases involving a spinal hematoma.
- You've recently had surgery, including dental surgery, or have any other surgery planned before or after the surgery in question.
- You've fallen or received any injuries to the body, especially your head, as there could be bleeding complications.
- You have a history of or currently have any bleeding disorders (e.g., hemophilia), low platelet count, or hemorrhaging.
- You have a history of heart disease or stroke, heart infections, or have an artificial heart valve.
- You have a history of or currently experience kidney or liver disease or ulcers.
- You have a history of or currently experience renal dysfunction.
- You are taking any other blood-thinners or similar medications.
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medication, supplements, or vitamins, including products like ibuprofen and aspirin.
- You have any food or medical allergies.
What are the possible side effects of taking enoxaparin sodium?
The most common side effects include: fever, irritation at the injection site, upset stomach or diarrhea, swelling in the hands or feet.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, discontinue your medication and contact your doctor immediately: bleeding that doesn't stop; black or bloody stool; blood in your urine; unusual bleeding from your mouth, nose, rectum or vagina; easy, unusual bruising or red/purple pin-point size spots on the skin; feeling lightheaded, short of breath, or having trouble breathing; sudden confusion, trouble concentrating, or sudden problems with speech, vision, and/or balance; sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling; loss of movement in any part(s) of your body.
What if I forget to take a dose of enoxaparin sodium?
Inject the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regimen as usual. Never take two or more doses at the same time.
How do I store enoxaparin sodium?
Store your syringes out of reach of children and pets, as well as at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I overdose on enoxaparin sodium?
If an overdose is suspected, call your local poison control center or emergency services immediately, as it may cause hemorrhagic complications.
Warnings
Only take your enoxaparin sodium injection as prescribed and only with the medications approved by your doctor, as improper combinations can cause fatal bleeding or other complications.
Your medication should be clear. If you see any discoloration or particulates, do not utilize that syringe. Talk to your pharmacist with any concerns.
