Entecavir Information:
What is entecavir?
Entecavir treats hepatitis B, a chronic viral liver infection. It is not a cure for hepatitis B and it will not prevent the transmission of this infection to other people, but it will prevent viral cells from multiplying, which will slow the growth of the infection.
How do I take entecavir?
Take entecavir on an empty stomach once a day, unless your doctor gives you different instructions. Your doctor will need to perform frequent blood tests while you are using this medication, and you will need to tell your doctor if you experience any weight changes. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose if you gain or lose weight.
Before taking entecavir, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements, especially lamivudine or telbivudine
- You have HIV or AIDS
- You have kidney disease
- You have liver disease or have had a liver transplant
- You have heart failure
- You have any infections other than hepatitis B
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking entecavir?
The most commonly reported drug side effects of entecavir include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and headache. If any of these side effects last a long time or become severe, tell your doctor. In rare cases, entecavir can cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Get emergency medical attention if you have any symptoms of lactic acidosis, including stomach pain, nausea with vomiting, muscle pain or weakness, unusual fatigue, difficulty breathing, or an irregular heart rate.
What if I forget to take a dose of entecavir?
Take the missed dose when you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at your regular time.
How do I store entecavir?
Store entecavir in a dry space at room temperature, out of reach of any pets or children in your home. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.
What happens if I overdose on entecavir?
If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the entecavir drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or seek emergency medical attention if the person who overdosed is experiencing serious adverse effects.
Warnings
Keep in mind that entecavir does not prevent the transmission of hepatitis B to other people during sex. Talk to your doctor about safe practices to prevent the spread of this infection.
