What is epinephrine?

The drug epinephrine is quite literally a shot of adrenaline, and is an alpha- and beta-adrenergic agonist, otherwise known as a sympathomimetic agent, to be delivered by intramuscular injection. It opens the lung airways and narrows blood vessels, thus treating life-threatening symptoms of severe allergic reactions to anything from food or drugs to exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Epinephrine can be used to reverse an array of allergy symptoms including but not limited to: severe itching, hives, wheezing and severely low blood pressure. However, epinephrine shots are for emergency use only.

Store epinephrine at room temperature and away from heat, cold, and light. Do not place your injection device in the freezer or store it in the car.

How do I take epinephrine?

Epinephrine is injected into the outer thigh directly into the muscle using a pre-filled auto-injector. It should be used at the first sign of a severe allergic reaction (e.g., itching, hives, hoarseness, stomach pain, loss of consciousness, fast or uneven heart rate, swelling in the face or throat, closing airways). The injection can be administered through clothing.  Some medication may remain in the cartridge - this does not mean you have not received the necessary dose.

If you are prescribed epinephrine, keep your automatic injector with you at all times in preparation of a possible allergic reaction. Always be aware of the expiration date on your medication. If your medication is past its expiration date or if the fluid looks discolored or has particles in it, do not use it. You may need a replacement.

After any use of the epinephrine drug, seek medical attention immediately for further treatment.

• You have any medical allergies.

What are the possible side effects of taking epinephrine?

Epinephrine drug side effects include: tremors, headache or dizziness, nausea or vomiting, fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sweatiness, pale and clammy skin, sense of fear or anxiety.

What if I forget to take a dose of epinephrine?

Because this medication is for emergency uses only, it is unlikely that you will have to take it on a repeat schedule.

Never take epinephrine in non-emergency situations without your doctor's instruction.

How do I store epinephrine?

Store epinephrine in a cool, dry place at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the injector pens from light. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to properly dispose of your epinephrine auto-injector or medicine cartridges after use.

What happens if I overdose on epinephrine?

Signs of an epinephrine drug overdose include slurred speech, issues with balance, dangerously high blood pressure, weakness on one side of the body, sudden numbness, worsened breathing, and vision problems. Tell your doctor or other medical personnel if you suspect an overdose when you seek medical attention following injection.

Always seek medical attention after injecting yourself with epinephrine. While this medication will save your life, you will need additional care. This medication may wear off after 10 - 20 minutes, and symptoms may return.

Always keep this medication out of reach from children and pets.

Do not use epinephrine if the medicine inside the cartridge seems discolored, has particles in the fluid, or is past the expiration date. Always contact your physician if you are unsure whether you need a replacement.

Only inject this medication directly into your outer thigh. Do not inject it into the buttock area as it may not be effective.
