Estring Information:
What is Estring?
Estring is a ring made to be inserted into the vagina to treat symptoms of menopause. Estring contains the drug or hormone estradiol. Estradiol is a type of estrogen, a female sex hormone that is essential to the development and maintenance of female reproductive tissues. The body begins to produce less estrogen during menopause, causing sometimes painful vaginal symptoms. By introducing more estrogen back into the body, the symptoms are alleviated.
How do I use Estring?
To insert the Estring, remove it from its pouch and hold it between your thumb and index finger. Press the sides of the ring together or twist it into a figure eight shape to make it easier to insert. Insert the tip of the ring into the vagina and then push the rest in with your index finger as far as you can. Unlike an IUD or diaphragm, this ring does not have to be positioned a certain way. You may leave it in for three months at a time. If the Estring falls out, wash it with warm water and reinsert it. After removing the Estring, do not flush it down the toilet. Wrap it in paper and throw it in the trashcan.
Before using Estring, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any estrogen products or any of the materials that make up the Estring.
- You are taking or using another drug besides Estring, whether it is prescription or over-the-counter.
- You are taking St. John’s wort.
- You’ve ever experienced yellowing of the skin or eyes during pregnancy or with the use of an estrogen drug.
- You have ever had endometriosis.
- You experience seizures or migraine headaches.
- You have had abnormal growths in the uterus.
- You have thyroid, liver, kidney, gallbladder or pancreatic disease.
- You have a vaginal infection or condition.
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Estring?
Side effects from using the Estring may include changes in libido, breast pain or tenderness, mood changes, bloating, nausea and vomiting, increased vaginal discharge and weight changes. If you experience unusual vaginal irritation, swelling of the hands or feet, increased urination and thirst, unusual bleeding, breast lumps, abdominal pain, left arm pain or chest pain, numbness or tingling in the arms or legs, unusual sweating, dizziness or confusion, yelling of the skin or eyes or dark-colored urine, contact your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to use Estring?
If you are not certain if you have inserted an Estring or not, contact your doctor for an exam to be certain.
How do I store Estring?
When not being used, Estrings should be stored in the pouches they come in at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. When disposing of an Estring, be sure not to flush it down the toilet. Wrap it in paper and put it in the trash. Make sure pets cannot access an Estring that has been disposes of.
What happens if I overdose on Estring?
If you think you have inserted more than one Estring at a time, contact your doctor for an exam to be certain. Excessive estrogen can increase the chances of dangerous side effects such as blood clots. See the side effects section for more details.
Warnings
Vaginal estrogen products like Estring may cause latex or rubber birth control devices to weaken. This could increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Talk to your doctor about other forms of birth control if contraception is needed. Taking estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, heart attacks, strokes or blood clots. Smoking tobacco while taking estrogen increases these risks.
