Frontline Information:
What is Frontline?
Frontline is a topical insecticide formulated to kill fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. It contains the drug fipronil, a chemical that kills fleas and ticks and interrupts the larval stage of immature fleas. There are currently no Frontline pills; Frontline medicine is available only as a liquid that is sprayed onto the coat of the infested animal.
How do I take Frontline?
Frontline is a topical solution sprayed onto the coat of an animal on a monthly basis. The amount used depends on the weight of the animal and the severity of the flea or tick infestation. Allow the liquid to dry before touching the pet’s coat. Wait thirty days between applications. Follow the instructions that come with Frontline. In areas with minimal flea and tick infestation, it may be applied less frequently.
Before taking Frontline, tell your doctor if:
- Your pet is allergic to fipronil or any of the ingredients in the Frontline medicine
- Your pet is pregnant
- Your pet is taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are using other chemical flea and tick control products
What are the possible side effects of taking Frontline?
Some people have reported side effects to their pets after applying Frontline including itching and skin irritation. Also, your pet may experience drooling if it licks its coat before the medication has a chance to dry. If these conditions persist or worsen, contact your veterinarian.
What if I forget to take a dose of Frontline?
If you forget to apply a scheduled dose of Frontline, do so as soon as your remember and are able. Wait thirty days between applications.
How do I store Frontline?
Keep Frontline tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the liquid to freeze. Speak with your veterinarian about the proper way to dispose of any unused or expired quantity of the Frontline medicine.
What happens if I overdose on Frontline?
Frontline is for topical application on dogs and cats only, as there are no Frontline pills. If there is skin irritation that lasts more than a few hours, bathe the pet and contact your veterinarian. If the liquid is accidentally ingested, contact a veterinarian or animal hospital. If a human accidentally swallows Frontline, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Frontline is for topical application only; do not drink or feed this medication to a pet or person. This medication is not for use on humans. Wait at least thirty days between applications.
