What is hydralazine HCl?
Hydralazine HCl (hydrochloride) is used to treat hypertension in emergency situations or where other medications have failed. It works as a vasodilator and relaxes vascular smooth muscle tissue. This causes the arteries and blood vessels to relax and expand, allowing blood to flow more freely and reducing pressure. This drug is not recommended as a first-line treatment as it can increase heart rate and lead to chest pain, retention of fluids, and even heart attack. Hydralazine is sometimes prescribed along with a beta blocker and diuretic to counteract these effects.
How do I take hydralazine HCl?
Hydralazine HCl comes as a tablet and can be purchased with a prescription from your local pharmacy. In emergency situations, it may be injected by a health professional. Take this medication up to four times daily with a full glass of water, following your doctor’s instructions. Take hydralazine at the same time every day. Do not stop taking it without speaking to your doctor first. Abrupt discontinuance of this medication can cause a worsening condition.

- You have a history of heart attack or stroke.

Taking high doses of hydralazine or using it for long periods can cause a patient develop drug-induced Lupus. Symptoms generally disappear after dosing is discontinued. Other side effects include diarrhea, elevated or pounding heartbeat, angina, flushing, loss of appetite, stuffy nose, watery eyes, headache, nausea, vomiting, vitamin B6 deficiency, depression, and vasculitis. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, swelling, muscle pain, flu-like symptoms, tingling hands or feet, or rapid heart rate.
What if I forget to take a dose of hydralazine HCl?
Take a missed dose of hydralazine as soon as your remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of hydralazine to compensate.
How do I store HCl?
Store hydralazine HCl tightly closed in a container at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on hydralazine HCl?
Signs of overdose on hydralazine include hypotension, elevated or irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and shock. If you or someone you know has overdosed on hydralazine, contact 911 emergency services.
