Loestrin 1.5/30 Information:
What is Loestrin 1.5/30?
An oral contraceptive, Loestrin 1.5/30 contains ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and norethindrone (progestin), two female hormones that prevent ovulation. They also effect changes to the cervical mucus and uterine lining to prevent sperm from reaching an egg and to make it harder for a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterine wall.
How do I take Loestrin 1.5/30?
Loestrin 1.5/30 is an oral contraceptive taken on a daily basis with water and without regard for food. Take the first active pill on the first Sunday after the start of your period; if your period begins on a Sunday, take the first pill on that day. Continue taking one pill a day for 21 days; once the packet is exhausted, wait seven days before beginning a new cycle. Have your doctor or pharmacist explain the dosing procedure, and follow those instructions exactly. Because this packaging of the Loestrin 1.5/30 drug does not come with inactive reminder pills, you must keep track of the number of days between the end of one round and the beginning of the next. Do not let more than 24 hours elapse between doses during the active cycle.
Before taking Loestrin 1.5/30, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, or any of the ingredients in Loestrin 1.5/30
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, seizures, migraine headaches, or depression

- You have heart disease, arrhythmia, tachycardia, coronary artery disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, or any cardiovascular conditions
- You have diabetes
- You have liver or kidney disease
- You have, or have had, uterine, cervical, or vaginal cancer
- You smoke
- You think you may be pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Loestrin 1.5/30?
Mild side effects of Loestrin 1.5/30 may include vaginal itching, changes to the menstrual cycle, weight gain, vaginal discharge, tender or swollen breasts, difficulty wearing contact lenses, and changes to skin pigmentation. If any of these side effects worsen or linger, contact your doctor. Severe side effects such as depression, disorientation, chest pain, liver disease, increased severity of migraine headaches, missed periods, a breast lump, or vision, balance, or speech problems require immediate medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of Loestrin 1.5/30?
If you forget to take a Loestrin 1.5/30 pill, refer to the instructions that accompanied your prescription for complete information. Use an alternative means of birth control for seven days after missing a pill.
How do I store Loestrin 1.5/30?
Keep Loestrin 1.5/30 in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light; do not store it in the bathroom. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about the best method for disposing of expired or unused pills.
