Migergot Information:
What is migergot?
Migergot is a combination medication of caffeine and ergotamine in a rectal formulation (a suppository). This medication is prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches and will only treat a headache that has already begun. It works by narrowing blood vessels in general, as well as specifically those around the brain. Ergotamine affects blood flow patterns that are associated with certain types of headaches.
How do I take migergot?
Do not take a rectal suppository by mouth. It is meant for use only in your rectum. Wash your hands before and after inserting the rectal suppository. Insert one suppository at the first sign of a migraine headache, or after the attack has begun. Begin by removing the wrapper. Don’t handle it too long or it will melt in your hands. You should lie on your back with your knees up toward your chest. Gently insert the suppository about one inch into your rectum. Lie still for several minutes until the suppository melts. If your migraine headache does not go away, you may use another suppository after one hour.
Before taking migergot, tell your doctor if:
-
You have coronary artery disease
-
You have high blood pressure
-
You have blood circulation problems
-
You have liver disease
-
You have kidney disease
-
You have sepsis
- You are taking certain drugs that could interact with migergot
What are the possible side effects of taking migergot?
Common side effects include dizziness, spinning sensation, weakness, nausea, vomiting, or mild itching or swelling. Stop using migergot and call your doctor immediately if you experience weak pulses in your arms, painful sores on your rectum, sudden numbness or weakness, sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, irregular heart rate, leg weakness, muscle pain, severe pain in your stomach or lower back, little to no urination, chest discomfort, dry cough or hacking, or dangerously high blood pressure.
What if I forget to take a dose of migergot?
Since you’re using this medication on an as-needed basis, you’re not likely to miss a dose. Do not use more than two suppositories per migraine headache or more than five weekly.
How do I store migergot?
Store this medication at room temperature away from sources of moisture and heat.
What happens if I overdose on migergot?
You should immediately seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Control hotline at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of migergot can be fatal.
Warnings
Don’t use this medication within 24 hours before or after using another type of migraine headache medication such as dihydroergotamine/ergonovine/methylergonovine or almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, naratriptan, sumatriptan, rizatriptan, or zolmitriptan. Also, avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
