What is naloxone?
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, which allows it to fight some of the dangerous side effects of opioid use. It prevents or reverses those opioid effects that can be life-threatening, including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension. It is also capable of reversing the dysphoric and psychotomimetic effects of agonist-antagonists such as pentazocine.
How do I use naloxone?
Naloxone doesn’t come in pills but is available in a syringe. The medicine in this syringe is intended for use in an emergency when someone has overdosed on opioid drugs. It is injected into the muscle, under the skin, or into a vein through an IV. Injections may be administered by an emergency medical provider, a healthcare provider, or a family member or caregiver who has undertaken the proper training to safely administer a naloxone injection.

- You are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant

Because naloxone causes opioids to become ineffective, it may cause sudden and severe withdrawal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, sweating, body aches, weakness, shivering, runny nose, yawning, increased heart rate, pounding heartbeats, high blood pressure, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, goosebumps, seizures, crying, stiffness, or overactive reflexes.
What if I forget to take a dose of naloxone?
Naloxone is taken only in emergency situations in which overdose is suspected or proven. Because it is not on a dosing schedule, it is impossible to miss a dose.
How do I store naloxone?
Store naloxone at room temperature away from moisture and heat. The injector will come in an outer case. Do not remove the outer case until you are ready to use this medication. Do not use it if it has particles in it or has changed colors.
What happens if I overdose on naloxone?
An overdose of naloxone may cause unwanted side effects. If you believe you may have overdosed on naloxone, get immediate medical help or call the Poison Control line at 1-800-222-1222.

Use of alcohol can increase certain negative side effects of naloxone. This drug may impair your ability to think or react. Avoid operating heavy machinery or performing difficult or dangerous tasks while using this medication. If you are currently using any narcotic pain medication, the pain-relieving effects will be reversed, which may lead to an increase in pain and discomfort.
