Nitrofurantoin Mono-Macro Information:
Nitrofurantoin mono-macro in an antibiotic drug that treats bacterial infections of the urinary tract. It works by killing the bacteria responsible for the infection. It will not work against viral or fungal infections.
Take this antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day in the morning and evening with food. Continue taking nitrofurantoin mono-macro for as long as your doctor has instructed you to, even if you feel better before then. If you skip doses or stop taking this medicine altogether, your infection may return.
Before taking nitrofurantoin mono-macro, tell your doctor if:
· You are allergic to nitrofurantoin
· You have experienced jaundice or liver problems after taking nitrofurantoin in the past
· You have kidney disease
· You are urinating less than usual
· You are breastfeeding or are in the last two to four weeks of pregnancy
· You have diabetes
· You have anemia or another blood disorder
· You have a history of numbness or tingling in your arms or legs
· You are weak due to a chronic disease
· You have optic neuritis
· You have an electrolyte imbalance, vitamin B deficiency, or G6PD deficiency
· You are taking any other medications, supplements, or vitamins
Nitrofurantoin mono-macro may cause headache, nausea, upset stomach, mild diarrhea, or vaginal itching. It may also cause dark urine, which is usually harmless. However, if you experience dark urine with persistent nausea and vomiting, severe stomach or abdominal pain, jaundice, fatigue, or an irregular heart rate, you should get medical help right away. You should also get emergency medical help if you experience any lung problems, numbness or tingling in your extremities, or unexplained muscle weakness. Contact your doctor right away if you experience unusual mood changes, ongoing headaches, unusual bruising or bleeding, eye pain, vision changes, or signs of a new infection.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed one and get back to your usual schedule. Don’t take two doses at the same time or close to the same time. It is best to take antibiotics at evenly spaced intervals.
Store nitrofurantoin mono-macro between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep it in a tightly sealed container and avoid exposure to light and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep nitrofurantoin mono-macro out of reach of any children or pets in your home.
If you believe you have overdosed on this drug, go to the nearest emergency room or call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) right away.
Warnings
Nitrofurantoin mono-macro may cause diarrhea. However, diarrhea can also sometimes be a sign of a new infection. If you have watery or bloody diarrhea, contact your doctor.
