What is Ovide?
Ovide contains malathion, an insecticide used in some medications to treat infestations of head lice. It works by killing lice and their nits.
How do I take Ovide?
Ovide is administered as a topical lotion applied only to the hair and scalp, typically in one or two treatments. Apply Ovide in sufficient quantity to cover and massage into the hair and scalp; leave it in place and allow the medication to air dry, uncovered, for 8 to 12 hours, then rinse it out with warm water in a sink. Do not shower or use the bathtub in order to prevent Ovide from coming in contact with the body. Use a lice comb to remove dead lice. All who have come in contact with the medication should wash their hands. If live lice are detected seven to nine days after the initial treatment, a second treatment can be applied. Sanitize all clothing and bedding that was worn when the lice were detected and during treatment.
Before taking Ovide, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to Malathion or any of the ingredients in Ovide
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have any skin allergies or sensitivities or you have any existing medical conditions
What are the possible side effects of taking Ovide?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Ovide. Less severe symptoms include irritation or stinging of the scalp or skin. If these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing).
What if I forget to take a dose of Ovide?
Ovide is used on an as needed basis.
How do I store Ovide?
Keep Ovide tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused quantity according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Ovide?
Ovide is for topical application only. If someone ingests this medication, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of ingestion include increased sweating, difficulty breathing, bradycardia, or an increase in saliva.
