Penicillin Information:
What is penicillin?
Penicillin medicines are antibiotics that are prescribed to treat a range of bacterial infections including pneumonia, infections of the ears, nose, and throat, scarlet fever, chorea, and recurrent rheumatic fever among others. They are not used to treat viral infections.
How do I take penicillin?
Depending on the prescription and formulation, penicillin is administered orally, intravenously, or by injection. Injections or IVs are typically performed in a doctor’s office or other medical setting. Oral administration includes pills and a liquid solution; dosing is normally every six or eight hours (three or four times a day). If taking penicillin pills, do so with a full glass of water; for the liquid, shake the container vigorously and dispense using a measured spoon. Take these medications an hour before eating or two hours after. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well; do not stop taking it without your doctor’s approval.
Before taking penicillin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to penicillin, cephalosporin, other penicillin drugs, or any of the ingredients in the medication
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking anticoagulants, NSAIDs, other antibiotics, probenecid, or oral contraceptives
- You have, or have had, allergies, hay fever, or asthma
- You have, or have had, colitis, blood disease or a bleeding disorder, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or stomach problems
What are the possible side effects of taking penicillin?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking the penicillin drug. Less severe symptoms include a mild skin rash, diarrhea, an upset stomach, or vomiting. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include wheezing, a vaginal infection, or signs of an allergic reaction (hives, severe rash, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing).
What if I forget to take a dose of penicillin?
If you forget to take a scheduled dose of penicillin, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one that was missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount taken or alter the dosing regimen to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store penicillin?
Keep penicillin tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children. Keep penicillin pills away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Store the solution in the refrigerator; do not allow it to freeze. Dispose of any expired or unused amounts according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on penicillin?
If an overdose of penicillin is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
This medication may compromise the effectiveness of birth control products. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking penicillin. This medication may cause an allergic reaction. If you have diabetes, test your urine for sugar by using Clinistix or Tes Tape.
