Pitocin Information:
What is Pitocin?
Pitocin is a synthetic version of the mammalian hormone oxytocin, and is used to stimulate or strengthen labor as well as to help control and reduce bleeding following childbirth. It is also used to stimulate contractions of the uterus in women facing a possible or incomplete miscarriage. It can be found on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) List of Essential Medicines.
How do I take Pitocin?
The most common administration of Pitocin is by intravenous injection in a hospital setting; however, there may be occasions when it needs to be injected into large muscle tissue. There are no Pitocin pills or capsules. The dosage is determined by the condition of the patient and by the doctor’s recommendations.
Before taking Pitocin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to oxytocin, or any medications
- You have had five pregnancies or more or your pregnancy is less than 37 weeks
- You have diabetes
- You have genital herpes
- You have arrhythmia or tachycardia
- You have high blood pressure
- You have had a severe uterine infection
- You have had a C-section; cervical or uterine surgery, or cervical or uterine cancer
- You have experienced difficult delivery because of a small pelvis
- You are taking any medications
What are the possible side effects of taking Pitocin?
Some patients have reported side effects from using Pitocin. Less severe side effects include nausea or vomiting, intense or increased contractions, sinus irritation, pain, or a runny nose, or memory loss. However, if these Pitocin side effects persist or worsen, notify your healthcare professional.
Severe Pitocin side effects requiring immediate medical attention include arrhythmia or tachycardia, Stage 2 hypertension, seizures, chest pain, severe headache, slurred speech, severe vomiting, loss of coordination and balance, excessive bleeding well after childbirth, fainting, muscle cramps, or shallow or stopped breathing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Pitocin?
Because the Pitocin drug is administered in a hospital setting according to a predetermined schedule, missing a dose is not factor.
How do I store Pitocin?
Pitocin will be stored at the medial facility under appropriate conditions.
What happens if I overdose on Pitocin?
Since Pitocin is administered and monitored by your healthcare professional, an overdose is unlikely.
Warnings
Pitocin is available only by prescription. Long-term administration can cause fetal brain damage or death. Pitocin may cause uterine rupture.
