Plan B One Step Information:
What is Plan B One-Step?
Plan B One-Step is an emergency contraceptive containing a progestin hormone. It works by preventing the release of an egg and making it more difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg, reducing the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex. This drug is not intended for use as a regular form of birth control, and it does not stop an existing pregnancy or protect against sexually transmitted infections.
How do I take Plan B One-Step?
You should take Plan B One-Step as soon as possible, as it is most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Dosing instructions will vary for different emergency contraceptive brands and generics, but you should only take one Plan B One-Step pill. If you vomit within 2 hours of taking this medication, ask your doctor if you need to repeat the dose.
Before taking Plan B One-Step, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to progestins or any of the ingredients in Plan B One-Step pills.
- You have unexpected vaginal bleeding
- You have diabetes
- You have a history of migraine headaches
- You are currently pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Plan B One-Step?
Serious side effects of Plan B One-Step are unlikely. However, some women have reported nausea, vomiting, changes in vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or headache after taking this medication. These symptoms are typically mild and go away on their own, but if they do not, tell your doctor or pharmacist. Talk to your doctor right away if you experience moderate or severe lower abdominal pain, and seek emergency medical attention if you think you are experiencing a severe allergic reaction to this drug.
What if I forget to take a dose of Plan B One-Step?
Because you will only take one dose of Plan B One-Step, it is unlikely that you will forget a dose. As mentioned above, you should take your single dose as soon as possible after having unprotected sex. If it has been more than 72 hours and you have not taken the medication, contact your doctor right away.
How do I store Plan B One-Step?
You should not need to store Plan B One-Step, as you will receive a single dose that you should take right away. If you are storing this medication, keep it at room temperature away from light and moisture and out of reach of pets and children.
What happens if I overdose on Plan B One-Step?
Because you will only take one Plan B One-Step tablet, overdosing should not be a concern. If you have taken multiple Plan B One-Step pills and suspect an overdose, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Plan B One-Step can make you dizzy, so do not drive, operate machinery, or participate in any other activities that require alertness until you know how the drug affects you. Remember that this medication can help prevent pregnancy but will not prevent the spreading of sexually transmitted infections.
Brand Name
Plan B One-Step is a brand name form of levonorgestrel (a progestin hormone). There are several other generic forms of the progestin-only emergency contraceptive, including Take Action, Next Choice One Dose, and My Way. If you need any of these medications, remember to talk to your doctor about getting a prescription so that you can save money on the retail cost with a Plan B One-Step coupon.
