What is Procort?
Procort is a combination of hydrocortisone (1.85%) and pramoxine (1.15%). It is prescribed to relieve the inflammation, pain, and discomfort that accompany minor skin irritations, burns, stings, allergic skin reactions, or hemorrhoids. Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that blocks that action of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation; pramoxine is a pain-relieving anesthetic that blocks nerve signals from the body to the brain.
How do I take Procort?
Procort is a topical medication applied directly to the affected area. Thoroughly wash and dry your hands and the treatment site before using this medication. Apply a small amount to the area and gently massage it in. If using Procort in the rectal area, apply it with a cotton swap or other applicator. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage. Wash your hands after applying the medicine. If the condition worsens, does not improve, or an infection develops, discontinue its use. Do not use for more than fourteen days.
Before taking Procort, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to hydrocortisone, pramoxine, or any of the ingredients in Procort
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are using other topical medications
- You have, or have had, a disorder or illness of the stomach or intestines, or a blood circulation or immune system disorder
- You have or have had, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, glaucoma, or a rectal sore or infection
- You are taking medications that weaken the immune system including those that used for cancer chemotherapy.
What are the possible side effects of taking Procort?
Some people have reported side effects after using Procort. Less severe symptoms include new or worsening acne; redness, itching, swelling, irritation, stinging, or pain at the application site; dry or cracking skin where the medication is applied; or a change in skin color. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your physician.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include bleeding at the application site, wheezing, hoarseness, or other signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing).
What if I forget to take a dose of Procort?
If you forget to apply a scheduled dose of Procort, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount applied or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Procort?
Keep Procort tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused amount according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Procort?
Procort is for external use only. If it has been ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Procort is for topical, external use only; do not eat or swallow this medication. Do not let this medication come in contact with the eyes or mucus membranes. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. If your condition does not improve, of if it worsens, discontinue its use and contact your healthcare provider. Do not use for more than 14 days.
