Pulmicort Flexhaler Information:
What is Pulmicort Flexhaler?
The Pulmicort Flexhaler is a device for delivering the medication budesonide, an anti-inflammatory adrenal glucocorticoid prescribed to prevent wheezing and breathing problems caused by asthma attacks and certain lung diseases; it is not used to treat an asthma attack that has commenced. Budesonide is steroid in white powder form that is inhaled using the Flexhaler (a proprietary inhaler). It works by preventing the body from releasing substances that cause inflammation.
How do I take Pulmicort Flexhaler?
The Pulmicort Flexhaler is used once or twice a day, depending on the profile of the patient and the strength of the dosage. If you have never used an inhaler, follow the instructions on the packaging for priming and using the device, and discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any questions you have about the proper way to use Pulmicort Flexhaler, and ask for a demonstration of the proper procedure. Make sure to clean the inhaler on a regular basis. When there are twenty doses left in the inhaler, a red mark will appear in the indicator window, alerting you that a refill will soon be needed.
Before taking Pulmicort Flexhaler, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to budesonide or any other medications
- You have a fungal or any type of infection
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You have diabetes, hypertension, ulcers, tuberculosis, osteoporosis, or thyroid problems
- You have a mental illness, have seizures, have myasthenia gravis, or a herpes eye infection
- You have, or have had, heart, gastro-intestinal, liver, or kidney disease
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking cimetidine, NSAIDs, digoxin, arthritis medication, theophylline, estrogen, rifampin, diuretics, oral contraceptives, ketoconazole, phenytoin, or phenobarbital
- You are taking oral corticosteroids
What are the possible side effects of taking the Pulmicort Flexhaler?
Some patients have reported side effects after using the Pulmicort Flexhaler. Less severe side effects include coughing, speech difficulties, sleep problems, dizziness, drying or irritation of the throat or mouth, and neck or stomach pain. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (fever, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), a persistent cold or infection, breathing problems; muscle aches, pain, or weakness; difficult or painful urination; rash or hives, sore throat; unusual bleeding or bruising; swelling of the extremities; white spots or sores in the mouth; or vision problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Pulmicort Flexhaler?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose from the Pulmicort Flexhaler, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled inhalation, skip the one missed, and resume the regular schedule. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the one missed.
How do I store Pulmicort Flexhaler?
Keep the Pulmicort Flexhaler in its container out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any expired or unused doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Pulmicort Flexhaler?
An overdose of the medication in the Pulmicort Flexhaler is not expected to cause serious or life threatening injuries; however, extended use of the medication can cause physical changes. If you experience any unusual symptoms while using this medication, contact your physician.
Warnings
The Pulmicort Flexhaler must be cleaned frequently. Changes in color or texture to sputum may indicate an infection. Switching from an oral corticosteroid to the Pulmicort Flexhaler may result in joint pain, breathing problems, or fatigue; contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Avoid exposure to chicken pox or measles; do not vaccinate or immunize against these diseases while taking this medication.
Brand Names
While Pulmicort Flexhaler is a proprietary name for budesonide and its method of delivery, there are some other brand names containing budesonide in an inhaler, including Pulmicort Respules, Pulmicort Turbuhaler, and Rhinocort Turbuhaler; however, speak with your physician before substituting one of these for your prescription. To lower the cost of the Pulmicort Flexhaler, take advantage of the Pulmicort Flexhaler coupon on the HelpRx site and enjoy a price reduction of up to 85% when used at your favorite pharmacy.
