Regranex Information:
What is Regranex?
Regranex is a gel that contains becaplermin, a human platelet-derived growth factor. Growth factor increases the proliferation of cells. It helps to heal diabetic wounds by increasing the proliferation of fibroblasts which are connective tissues that are essential for wound healing and the production of collagen.
How do I take Regranex?
Wash your hands before applying Regranex and carefully rinse the ulcer using just your hands and water. Wash your hands again. Squeeze the amount of medication your doctor has prescribed out of the tube and onto a clean surface that won’t absorb the medication. Use an applicator such as a cotton swab to apply the medication to the affected area in a thin layer. Make sure the applicator is clean or sterile. After application, cover the wound only with a piece of gauze with saline. Cover the moistened gauze with a dry pad dressing and then wrap the dressing with a gauze bandage. Hold it in place with adhesive tape. Your doctor or pharmacist will show you how. Repeat after 12 hours. Regranex is normally applied twice daily. Your doctor may change your dose based on how the wound heals.
Before taking Regranex, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Regranex, especially parabens.
- You have or have ever had cancer.
- You have reduced blood flow in your lower extremities.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications or herbal supplements, especially any other products or medications that you are using on the ulcers.
What are the possible side effects of taking Regranex?
Most people use Regranex without noticing side effects. If you experience an allergic reaction or notice any unusual adverse effects, tell your doctor right away. See the warnings section for more information.
What if I forget to take a dose of Regranex?
If you forget to apply a dose of Regranex, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not apply two doses to try to compensate for a missed one.
