Relenza Information:
What is Relenza?
Relenza is an antiviral drug. It is used to relieve flu symptoms (including fever, body aches, cough, and stuffy nose) and shorten recovery time by stopping the growth of the virus. It may also be prescribed to help prevent the flu if someone in your household has this type of viral infection, but it should not be used as a replacement for an annual flu shot. It does not make the flu any less contagious.
How do I take Relenza?
Read all the instructions that come with your Relenza Diskhaler before using this device. If you still have questions, talk to your pharmacist or doctor. Do not administer this medication through any other inhaler (such as an asthma inhaler), and do not mix the inhalation powder with a liquid. Your dosage will depend on whether you are using the medication to treat or prevent the flu, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
Before taking Relenza, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are allergic to lactose
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a breathing disorder, such as asthma or COPD
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Relenza?
Serious side effects of the Relenza drug are rare, but you may experience headache, dizziness, or coughing after using a dose. If you have severe breathing problems or become extremely lightheaded after using Relenza, call your doctor immediately. Get emergency medical attention if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as facial swelling or hives.
What if I forget to take a dose of Relenza?
Take the missed dose once you remember, unless you are within two hours of your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not double your dose to catch up. If you miss more than one dose, contact your doctor to find out what to do.
How do I store Relenza?
Keep Relenza in a dry space at room temperature. Do not puncture a blister of inhalation powder before you are ready to use it. As with all prescription drugs, keep Relenza out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Relenza?
Serious complications from an overdose of Relenza are unlikely, but if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this inhaled medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.
Warnings
Because dizziness is a possible side effect of Relenza, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Do not use Relenza if you have used an inhaled nasal flu vaccine (e.g. FluMist) within the past few weeks, as the Relenza drug may make the vaccine less effective. If you are also using a bronchodilator (e.g. albuterol), take it before your dose of Relenza.
