Sarafem Information:
What is Sarafem?
Sarafem is an SSRI medicine (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). This means it works by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. This can help to improve mood in patients with PMDD.
How do I take Sarafem?
Sarafem tablets should be swallowed whole. Do not crush, break or chew the tablets. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Most patients start taking 20mg per day. Some patients are recommended to take Sarafem every day, while others only need to take it two weeks out of the month. Take your medication at the same time every day for best results.
Before taking Sarafem, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially St. John’s wort or tryptophan.
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, especially other antidepressants, medications for other mental disorders, sleeping pills, sedatives, diuretics, medications for Parkinson’s disease, NSAIDs and blood thinners.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Sarafem medicine.
- You have diabetes.
- You have seizures.
- You have liver or heart disease.
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- You are breastfeeding.
- You have glaucoma.
What are the possible side effects of taking Sarafem?
Sarafem may cause side effects such as drowsiness, nervousness, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, sweating, yawning, trouble sleeping and loss of appetite. If these side effects are severe or if they don’t go away over time, tell your doctor. Some side effects should be addressed as soon as possible. Tell your doctor right away if you experience suicidal thoughts, agitation, unusual levels of excitement, insomnia, weight loss, vision changes, eye pain or swelling, tremors, fainting, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat and seizures.
What if I forget to take a dose of Sarafem?
If you forget to take a dose of Sarafem, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Do not take double doses to compensate for missed ones.
How do I store Sarafem?
Keep Sarafem out of reach of children and pets. Store the medication at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect it from light and moisture.
What happens if I overdose on Sarafem?
Signs of overdose on Sarafem include seizures, nausea, rapid heart rate and vomiting. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on Sarafem, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
