Soriatane Information:
What is Soriatane?
Soriatane capsules contain a medication called acitretin, which is a retinoid drug. Retinoids like acitretin bind to retinoid receptors in cells and have an effect on cell proliferation. They also reduce inflammation and keratinization in skin cells. Oral retinoids can have serious side effects. Be sure to carefully read the warnings and side effects for Soriatane before beginning treatment.
How do I take Soriatane?
Soriatane comes in the form of a capsule and is normally taken once per day with the main meal. Doses normally start at 25-50mg per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose overtime depending on your body’s response. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Women will be required to use two forms of contraception before during and after treatment with Soriatane.
Before taking Soriatane, tell your doctor if:
- You have liver or kidney disease.
- You have high cholesterol or high triglyceride levels.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Soriatane.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially methotrexate, tetracyclines, vitamin A, other retinoids, topical medications or other psoriasis treatments.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
- You suffer from depression.
- You have diabetes or high blood sugar levels.
- You have heart disease.
- You are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you plan to become pregnant in the next three years.
- You’ve ever had a stroke.
- You have bone or joint problems.
- You have spinal problems.
- You are undergoing phototherapy.
What are the possible side effects of taking Soriatane?
Common side effects from taking Soriatane include dry mouth, dry eyes, dry nasal passages, peeling skin, chapped lips, changes in taste, red and itchy skin, scaling skin, tight muscles and thirst. These side effects should improve over time. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report immediately include fever, chills, vision problems, aches and pains, swelling, blistering of the skin, depression, aggression, sudden weight gain, abdominal pain, vomiting, severe headaches, chest pain, feeling weak, and trouble moving.
What if I forget to take a dose of Soriatane?
If you miss a dose of Soriatane, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regimen. Never take a double dose or consecutive doses of Soriatane to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Soriatane?
Store Soriatane at a temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the pills from sunlight and moisture and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Soriatane?
Signs of drug overdose on Soriatane are similar to those of vitamin A overdose. Too much vitamin A is toxic and can be fatal. Symptoms include vision changes, bone pain, dizziness and headache. If you or someone you know has taken too much Soriatane, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe, seek medical attention at once.
