What is Stimate?
Stimate is the man-made hormone desmopressin, an endocrine-metabolic agent of the vasopressin class of drugs. The Stimate drug is prescribed to treat central cranial diabetes insipidus, a condition in which the body produces excess amounts of urine. It may also be prescribed to stop certain individuals after certain surgeries or following a head injury as well as to stop bleeding in those with certain bleeding disorders such as Hemophilia A and von Willebrand’s Disease. It works by replacing vasopressin, a hormone responsible for balancing water and salt in the body.
How do I take Stimate?
Stimate is a nasal spray; the dosing amount and frequency will depend on the condition being treated and the medical profile of the patient. Follow all instructions that accompanied the prescription and the medication, including how to prime the spray pump. Ask your healthcare provider for assistance if you do not understand any part of the prescription or how to use the sprayer. The bottle will identify how many sprays are contained (not counting the priming sprays); dispose of the medication once that number is reached, even if there is still medication remaining in the container.
Before taking Stimate, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to desmopressin or any of the ingredients in the Stimate drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, or have had, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, hypertension, blood clots, or heart disease
- You have, or have had, low sodium levels, or a condition that makes you excessively thirsty or generates a high-volume of urine
- You have atrophic rhinitis, have recently had face or head surgery, or have a stuffed or runny nose
- You drink alcohol regularly
What are the possible side effects of taking Stimate?
Some individuals have reported side effects after using Stimate. Chills, sleep difficulties, dizziness, heartburn, nosebleed, nostril pain, weakness, pain in the genital area, a feeling of warmth, and stomach pain are considered mild and require no medical attention unless they persist or worsen. Severe side effects such as chest pain, confusion, extreme tiredness, tachycardia, visual and aural hallucinations, headache, irritability, appetite loss, nausea, loss of consciousness, weak, cramping muscles, restlessness, seizures, slowed reflexes, vomiting, and weight gain require immediate medical attention.
What if I forget to take a dose of Stimate?
If you forget your scheduled dose of Stimate, use it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose, skip the one missed and return to the original schedule. Do not increase the amount used or change the regimen to make up for the one missed.
How do I store Stimate?
Keep Stimate tightly sealed in an upright position in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any expired or unused doses according to the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Stimate?
If you suspect an overdose of Stimate has occurred, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for help. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include drowsiness, problems urinating, headache, confusion, or sudden weight gain.
Warnings
Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while using Stimate. This medication may make you sleepy, drowsy, or affect your coordination; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. You doctor may adjust the amount of fluids you consume during treatment.
Brand Names
Stimate is a brand name of the hormone desmopressin in a nasal spray; similar brands include Minirin Nasal and DDAVP Nasal. However, these medications cannot be substituted for one another without express written medical condition.
