Subutex Information:
What is Subutex?
Subutex is an opioid agonist-antagonist which is used to help patients overcome an opioid addiction by producing opioid agonist effects with a ceiling effect. Because Subutex itself contains an opioid, it is a controlled substance and is often only used in the first 1 to 2 days of opioid addiction treatment in order to prevent patients from developing a physical dependence on the drug.
How do I take Subutex?
If prescribed Subutex by your doctor, follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. You will likely start with a low dosage taken once daily, although your doctor may increase the dosage over the next few days. Because Subutex pills are a sublingual drug, you will need to put the tablet under your tongue and wait for it to dissolve (which usually takes between 2 and 10 minutes). If your doctor instructs you to take two tablets for one dose, place both tablets under your tongue at the same time. Never chew or swallow the tablets.
Before taking Subutex, tell your doctor if:
- You have any medication allergies
- You are currently taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, nutritional supplements, vitamins, or herbal supplements
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding
- You have a history of alcohol abuse
- You have or have had adrenal problems, an enlarged prostate, head injuries, hallucinations, or gallbladder, liver, lung, or kidney disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Subutex?
While Subutex is taken to minimize the withdrawal symptoms of opioid drugs, patients may still experience some of these symptoms, including feeling a change in body temperature, increased sweating, nausea, vomiting, shaking, diarrhea, and muscle soreness. Other common side effects can include headaches, constipation, and difficulty sleeping. In some cases, a patient may experience more severe symptoms, including respiratory problems, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, or unusual bleeding. Contact your doctor if you experience these or any other unusual Subutex side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of Subutex?
If you realize that you have forgotten to take your daily dose of Subutex, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for another dose. If it is almost time for another dose, continue your regular dosage schedule rather than taking a double dose.
How do I store Subutex?
Store Subutex pills or tablets at room temperature in its tightly sealed original container. Avoid storing this medication anywhere it may be exposed to higher temperatures and moisture, such as a bathroom medicine cabinet, and always keep Subutex hidden from and out of reach of children. If you have any unused tablets that have expired, talk to your pharmacist about how best to dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on Subutex?
An overdose of Subutex may cause symptoms including slowed breathing, dizziness, extreme fatigue, and blurred vision. Call poison control if you have overdosed on Subutex. If someone in your household overdoses on this medication and collapses or is not breathing, call 911 immediately.
Warnings
Subutex should never be taken with alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or benzodiazepenes, as the chemical interaction can cause an overdose or even death. You should never inject Subutex, as it can cause severe opioid withdrawal symptoms, infections, and other serious health problems. Because Subutex can cause respiratory problems, you should seek emergency medical attention if you have trouble breathing or feel dizzy after taking a dose.
Brand Names
Subutex is the brand name for the generic drug bupenorphrine. It should not be confused with Suboxone, which is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone and may also be used to treat opioid addiction.
