What is terconazole?
Terconazole is used to treat fungal and yeast infections of the vagina. It is known as an azole antifungal and works by stopping the growth of yeast (fungus) that causes the infection. Terconazole comes in the form of a cream and as a vaginal suppository to insert into the vagina.
How do I take terconazole?
Depending on whether you are prescribed the cream or the suppository version of terconazole, instructions will vary. Typically, the terconazole cream comes with a special applicator that has indicators as to how much to use per dose. To use the suppository, unwrap it, wet it with lukewarm water. Lie on your back with your knees drawn upward and spread apart.
Insert the applicator high into your vagina and push the plunger to release the medication.
Withdraw the applicator. Clean the applicator with soap and warm water after each use.
Wash your hands before use and after to avoid spreading the infection.
The dose should be applied at nighttime before bed. Terconazole works best if you do not get up again after applying it. You may wish to wear a sanitary napkin to protect your clothing against stains, but avoid using a tampon because it will absorb the drug. Use terconazole exactly as directed by your prescribing doctor.
Before taking terconazole, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to terconazole, other antifungals, or have any other drug allergies
- You are taking any prescription and nonprescription drugs, especially antibiotic medications and vitamins
- You have or had immune system issues, human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), or diabetes
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
What are the possible side effects of taking terconazole?
Some more serious side effects that require contacting your doctor immediately include:
burning in vagina when terconazole cream or suppository is inserted, irritation in vagina when cream or suppository is inserted, stomach pain, fever, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, or symptoms of an allergic reaction like rash, itchiness, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
Other more common side effects that should still be mentioned to your doctor include: headache and missed menstrual periods, or more frequent/painful menstrual cramps.
What if I forget to take a dose of terconazole?
Insert the missed dose of terconazole as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not insert a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store terconazole?
Terconazole should be kept tightly closed and in the container it came in, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Discard any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What happens if I overdose on terconazole?
Though it is difficult to overdose on terconazole if administered correctly, it may be harmful if swallowed. If swallowing or symptoms of overdose/allergic reaction are suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Ask your doctor whether you can have sexual intercourse while using this product. The suppository may damage rubber products such as condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps) and lead to failure. Do not use these products during treatment with the suppository form and for 3 days after treatment is over. Consult your doctor about other forms of barrier protection/birth control during this time or use the cream form of terconazole.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Pregnant women should use extra care when using the vaginal applicator. Follow your doctor's instructions closely on how to insert the medication using the applicator.
