Trinessa Information:
What is Trinessa?
Trinessa is a birth control or an oral contraceptive that is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. These are oral forms of the female hormones estrogen and progestin, respectively. Trinessa works by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Trinessa is also commonly prescribed to clear up acne vulgaris by regulating hormones.
How do I take Trinessa?
Print a Trinessa coupon to reduce the cost when you fill your prescription. Trinessa birth control comes in a dial pack that is labeled with numbers rather than days of the week. As with most birth control pills, you must take your pill at the same time every day for maximum efficacy. You can start taking Trinessa any time of the month, and you will begin with the white pills and end with the green pills, which are the reminder pills. If you begin taking Trinessa within five days of starting your period, you will be immediately protected against pregnancy. If you start at any other time, you will need to use an alternative form of contraception, such as a condom, for one week. You may need to use it for a longer period of time if this is your first time using birth control. Talk to your doctor about how long you should use your birth control alternative.
Before taking Trinessa, tell your doctor if:
- You plan to become pregnant, you might be pregnant, or you are breast feeding.
- You smoke tobacco.
- You have ever had a blood clot, stroke, heart disease, or chest pain.
- You have ever had breast cancer or a cancer of the reproductive system.
- You have liver or kidney disease.
- You have diabetes, gall bladder disease, or seizures.
- You have experienced abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- You are allergic to estrogen, progestin, or any other oral contraceptives.
- You are taking antibiotics, other birth control pills, NSAIDs, blood thinners, antifungals, seizure medications, steroids, St. John’s wort, and any other medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking Trinessa?
Side effects from taking Trinessa include bloating, weight gain, nausea, spotting, breast tenderness, mood changes, and decreased libido. In rare cases it may also raise blood pressure, especially for women over the age of 35 who are smokers. See the warnings section for more information. Spotting and nausea may occur during the first three months of using Trinessa. If these side effects continue, talk to your doctor. If you experience any serious or abnormal side effects, call your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of Trinessa?
The action you should take if you miss a pill depends on the color of the pill. If you miss one active pill, take it as soon as you remember and then continue on your regular schedule. If you miss two active pills, take two pills on that day and two pills the next day and continue on your regular schedule. Use a backup birth control for seven days. If you miss two pills in week three, or the dark blue pills, you will need to throw the pack out and start a new one. If you miss more than two pills at any time, call your doctor and use back up contraception. However, if you miss any green pills, you can skip them and continue on your regular schedule. These are just reminder pills.
How do I store Trinessa?
Store Trinessa at room temperature and protect it from moisture and light. Keep your birth control out of reach of children and keep it in a place where you will remember to take it at the same time every day.
What happens if I overdose on Trinessa?
Ingesting large amounts of oral contraceptives like Trinessa have not resulted in severe effects. If you are taking too much Trinessa, you might experience nausea and irregular bleeding. Report any excessive use of birth control to your doctor. If a child has accidently swallowed multiple pills, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
