What is Trizivir?
Trizivir contains three active ingredients: abacavir, lamivudine, and zidovudine. These three drugs reduce the amount of HIV in your body, which allows your immune system to work better and reduces your risk of serious complications. Trizivir can help manage HIV, but it is not a cure for the virus, and it will not stop the spread of the virus to other people. Talk to your doctor about safe practices to prevent spreading HIV.
How do I take Trizivir?
Take Trizivir with or without food on the dosing schedule provided by your doctor (usually twice a day). Take this medication on a regular basis to get the most benefit, and do not suddenly stop taking it without first talking to your doctor.
Before taking Trizivir, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other drugs or supplements
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have hypertension or heart disease
- You have diabetes
- You have high cholesterol
- You are a smoker
- You have bone marrow suppression
- You have low red or white blood cell counts
- You are breastfeeding or pregnant
What if I forget to take a dose of Trizivir?
Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. If you miss two or more doses, call your doctor to find out what to do. Missing multiple doses and then starting your dosing schedule again can put you at risk for a life-threatening allergic reaction.
How do I store Trizivir?
Store the Trizivir drug at room temperature. Do not keep your medication in the bathroom, and do not store it anywhere that children or pets can access. If you are no longer using this medication and have leftover tablets, contact your pharmacist to find out how to safely dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on Trizivir?
If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call your local Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do. If the person who overdosed is experiencing serious adverse effects, seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication, since alcohol can increase your risk of liver damage. Keep all scheduled appointments with your healthcare provider; your doctor will likely want to perform regular blood tests to ensure your Trizivir dose is effective. Stop using Trizivir if you have any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, fever, stomach pain, or body aches. You can’t use this medication if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it.
