Zarah Information:
What is Zarah?
Zarah is a hormonal contraceptive pill that works to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucous and changing the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching. Zarah is 99% effective when used properly.
How do I take Zarah?
For it to be the most effective, Zarah pills should be taken at the same time every day. It may be taken with or without food. Choose a time of day when it is easiest for you to remember and take your pill. Start taking Zarah on the first day of your period, or after you have finished a different pack of birth control. Zarah may also be started on the first Sunday after your period starts. If you are not switching to Zarah from another hormonal contraceptive, or you are starting Zarah on another day besides the first day of menstruation, you will have to use back-up birth control for seven days. Ask your doctor for specific instructions.
Before taking Zarah, tell your doctor if:
- You have ever had a stroke or blood clot.
- You have ever had a heart attack.
- You smoke cigarettes.
- You have heart disease or high blood pressure.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- You have ever had breast cancers or any other cancers of the reproductive system.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You get migraine headaches.
- You have adrenal insufficiency.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Zarah pills.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements, including seizure medications, antibiotics, St. John’s wort, antifungals, barbiturates, antiviral drugs, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, potassium, NSAIDs and any medications that affect hormones.
What are the possible side effects of taking Zarah?
Side effects from taking Zarah include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, spotting and weight changes. These side effects should lessen over time. If side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Hormonal contraceptives such as Zarah can increase your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience chest pain, pain in the upper arm or jaw, numbness or weakness one side of the body, slurred speech, confusion and pain, swelling or warmth in the groin or calf areas. Also tell your doctor if you experience new or worsening migraines, vision changes, breast lumps, heavy vaginal bleeding or a missed period.
What if I forget to take a dose of Zarah?
If you miss a dose of Zarah, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and then continue on your normal regimen. If you miss two or more pills in a row during week 1 or 2, take two pills the day you remember and two the following day. Use back up contraception for seven days. If you miss three or more pills, or if you miss two or more pills in week three, call your doctor and ask him or her what to do. You may need to start a new pack.
How do I store Zarah?
Store Zarah at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it in a place where you will always remember to take it on time. Keep Zarah pills out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Zarah?
Overdose on Zarah may result in nausea, vomiting, vaginal bleeding and high potassium levels. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Zarah, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the person is unconscious or unresponsive, call 911.
