Afluria Information:
What is Afluria?
Afluria is a brand name inactivated influenza vaccine and it is an injectable liquid administered by your doctor. Taking Afluria can help to prevent you from getting the flu, make the flu less severe if you do get it, and keep you from spreading the flu to other people.
It takes about 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine for Afluria to offer protection from the flu, and Afluria continues to offer protection that will last through the flu season.
Afluria contains a very small amount of a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal and studies have not shown thimerosal to be harmful.
There are no flu viruses in Afluria vaccine.
How do I use Afluria?
A dose of flu vaccine is recommended every flu season. The vaccine is administered by your doctor as an injection.
You can still receive Afluria if you have a minor cold.
Before using Afluria, tell your doctor if:
-
you have any severe, life-threatening allergies
-
you ever had a severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine
-
you are allergic to eggs
-
you ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (also called GBS)
- you are not feeling well
What are the possible side effects of using Afluria?
You may experience the following side effects 1 to 2 days after taking Afluria. Tell your doctor if they do not go away:
-
soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
-
hoarseness or cough
-
red or itchy eyes
-
fever, aches, or headache
-
itchy skin
-
fatigue
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following reactions:
-
very high fever
-
unusual behavior
- signs of a severe allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and weakness
What if I forget to use a dose of Afluria?
You typically receive only a single dose annually of Afluria from your doctor.
How do I store Afluria?
Afluria is a vaccine administered by your doctor so storing this drug is not necessary.
What happens if I overdose on Afluria?
You typically receive only a single dose annually of Afluria from your doctor, so overdose is not likely. However, be sure to inform your doctor of any adverse side effects you may experience after receiving Afluria.
Warnings
Afluria will not cause you to become ill with the flu. You may develop flu-like symptoms at any time during flu season that may be caused by other strains of the influenza virus that Afluria does not protect against.
Afluria does not offer protection against the avian (“bird”) flu.
Is Afluria a Brand or Generic drug?
Afluria is a brand drug and the Afluria generic name is influenza vaccine. Other similar brand name vaccines include Agriflu, Fluarix, Fluvirin, and Fluzone. Consult with your doctor to determine which vaccine is best for you.
