Bupap Information:
What is Bupap?
Bupap contains two pain-relieving drugs: butalbital and acetaminophen. Butalbital is a barbiturate drug and a central nervous system depressant. Barbiturates enhance the effects of the GABA neurotransmitter and acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer with mild anti-inflammatory properties. The way in which these drugs work in tandem to effectively relieve tension headaches is not completely understood.
How do I take Bupap?
Bupap comes in tablets of 50mg/300mg doses of butalbital/acetaminophen. This medication is taken as needed to treat tension headaches. It should not be taken on a regular basis and not for extended periods because of the high potential for abuse. One or two Bupap pills can be taken once every four hours as long as pain relief is needed. Do not exceed 6 tablets in one day.
Before taking Bupap, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Bupap medicine. If you are unsure, ask your doctor for a list of ingredients.
- You have or have ever had kidney or liver disease.
- You have a stomach or intestinal disorder.
- You have a history of drug or alcohol addiction.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially any other sedatives, tranquilizers, cold or allergy medications, pain relievers, NSAIDs, aspirin or Tylenol.
- You are taking any herbal supplements.
- You are pregnant, become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Bupap?
Possible side effects from taking Bupap include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, tremors, dizziness, drowsiness, feeling lightheaded, increased urination and trouble sleeping. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or persistent. Other more serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include fainting, trouble breathing, allergic reaction, negative mood changes, seizures and fast or irregular heartbeat.
What if I forget to take a dose of Bupap?
Bupap medicine is taken as needed. Do not exceed six pills in one day.
How do I store Bupap?
Store Bupap tightly closed in the container it came in and keep it at a temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. Do not share it with anyone else.
What happens if I overdose on Bupap?
Overdose on Bupap can result in extreme drowsiness, confusion, respiratory depression, dangerously low blood pressure, coma and hypovolemic shock. If you or someone you now has just overdoses on Bupap, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive, not breathing or unconscious, call 911 immediately.
Warnings
Do not drink alcohol while taking Bupap medicine. This can result in dangerous side effects. Do not drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery. Get up slowly from a reclining position to reduce dizziness. Do not take more of this medication than what is prescribed. Tell your doctor if this medication stops working or doesn’t relieve your pain as well as it once did. This medication can be habit-forming.
Brand Names
There are currently no other brand names for Bupap. Fioricet is a significantly cheaper medication, but it has caffeine added. It contains the same dose as butalbital. Generic Fioricet (acetaminophen/butalbital/caffeine) is even cheaper. Search HelpRx for Bupap coupons and discounts on any of these other medications. Find the most affordable option that works for you.
