Clindesse Information:
What is Clindesse?
Clindesse (clindamycin) is in the lincosamide antibiotics class of drugs. It treats bacterial vaginosis by killing the bacteria that causes the infection. It comes as a vaginal cream and is approved for use in women who are not pregnant.
How do I take Clindesse?
Wash your hands before and after using the Clindesse drug. Insert the medication-filled applicator high into the vagina and press the plunger to release. Because this is a single dose medication, you can use it at any time of the day. For more detailed instructions on how to use this drug, refer to the information on the package or contact your pharmacist.
Before taking Clindesse, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to clindamycin or any other medications
- You have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have a history of intestinal disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Clindesse?
Serious side effects of the Clindesse drug are rare. Some women have reported mild stomach upset after using this medication, but this will usually go away after a short amount of time. There have also been infrequent reports of vaginal discharge, burning, or itching after using Clindesse. If you experience any unusual side effects that persist or worsen, tell your doctor right away.
What if I forget to take a dose of Clindesse?
Because this is a single dose medication that can be taken at any time to treat a vaginal bacterial infection, you should not have to worry about forgetting a dose.
How do I store Clindesse?
Keep Clindesse at room temperature (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not store it in the bathroom, as heat and moisture can cause it to become less effective. As with all prescription medications, keep this drug out of sight and reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Clindesse?
Since you will only be prescribed a single dose of Clindesse, it is unlikely that you will overdose on the medication when inserting it in your vagina. However, it can be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed this medication, call 1-800-222-1222 to reach your local poison control center.
Warnings
Do not use tampons or have vaginal intercourse the day that you use the Clindesse drug, as this can make the cream less effective. You should also avoid using latex condoms or diaphragms for up to 5 days after using this medication, as the mineral oil in Clindesse can weaken rubber products and make them less effective. Talk to your doctor about alternative forms of barrier protection and birth control you can use during this time.
Brand Names
Clindesse is currently only available as a brand name drug; there is no cheaper generic alternative on the market. If you need help covering the Clindesse price, remember to print or download a free Clindesse coupon from HelpRx.
